Well done on making it this far into the course! Hopefully you are continuing to try to produce the sentences yourself. 

In this unit we will continue talking about "he" and "she" as well as reviewing some older material.

The ways to say “he or she has to”, “he or she wants”, “he or she would like”, “he or she wants”, “he or she can” and “he or she should” are the same as the forms for “I”.

First, let’s repeat the forms for “I”.

I have to.

Ich muss.

I have to go.

Ich muss gehen.

I should.

Ich sollte.

I should go but I can’t.

Ich sollte gehen, aber ich kann nicht.

I want.

Ich will.

I want to go now.

Ich will jetzt gehen.

I should go but I don’t want to.

Ich sollte gehen, aber ich will nicht.

I have to learn German.

Ich muss Deutsch lernen.

So, can you guess what: “he wants and she wants” is in German?:

He wants. She wants.

Er will. Sie will.

What about: He has to. She has to.

Er muss. Sie muss.

He would like. She would like.

Er möchte. Sie möchte.

He can. She can.

Er kann. Sie kann.

He should. She should.

Er sollte. Sie sollte.

He wants to speak.

Er will sprechen.

She wants to go.

Sie will gehen.

He would like to learn.

Er möchte lernen.

She would like to speak.

Sie möchte sprechen.

She can’t speak.

Sie kann nicht sprechen.

He can speak no German.

Er kann kein Deutsch sprechen.

zur Arbeit kommen.

Can she come to work?

Can he come? No he can’t. He has to work.

Kann er kommen? Nein, er kann nicht. Er muss arbeiten.

She has to work.

Sie muss arbeiten.

She wants to come but she can’t because she has to work.

Sie will kommen, aber sie kann nicht, denn sie muss arbeiten.

The word for “today” is:

Heute.

Let’s say it again:

I am working today.

Ich arbeite heute.

I can do it.

Ich kann es machen.

I can do it today.

Ich kann es heute machen.

She can do it today.

Sie kann es heute machen.

I can’t do it today.

Ich kann es heute nicht machen.

I can’t do it today but I think she kann.

She should do it today if possible.
