Glory! I believe that one of the greatest battles the Church will face is resisting the "spirit of conformity." Romans 12:2 instructs us to "be not conformed to this world." There is going to be such a strong pull to conform to the world because it is fashionable. The Philips Translation says, "Don't let the world around you squeeze you into its mold" (Rom. 12:2). First Corinthians 2:12 says, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God."
The three main characteristics of the spirit of the world are:
1) the lust of the flesh
2) the lust of the eyes, and
3) the pride of life.
Every worldly desire comes under one of these three categories. That's a picture of our society! How do you resist and overcome such a seductive, powerful spirit?
In 2 Timothy 2:22 (Living Bible) we see these instructions, "Run from anything that gives you evil thoughts, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts."
