어느 날 여자는 창가에 서서 정원을 내려다보다가

One day the woman was standing by this window and looking down into the garden,

마녀의 화단에 정말로 아름다운 초롱꽃이 심어져 있는 것을 발견하였습니다.

when she saw a bed which was planted with the most beautiful rapunzel,

초롱꽃은 너무나 싱싱하고 푸르러 보였습니다.

and it looked so fresh and green

그것은 그녀의 시선을 빼았았고

that she longed for it,

그녀는 이윽고 너무나 그것이 먹고 싶어졌습니다.

and had the greatest desire to eat some.

식욕은 나날이 커져갔지만

This desire increased every day,

여자는 그것을 얻을 수 없었기에,

and as she knew that she could not get any of it,

애통했고, 창백하고 비참해 보였습니다.

she quite pined away, and looked pale and miserable.

그러자 그녀의 남편이 놀라서 물었습니다.

Then her husband was alarmed, and asked,

’내 사랑, 무엇이 당신을 힘들게 하는거야?”

"What ails you, dear wife?"

여자가 대답하였습니다.

"Ah," she replied,

“아, 내가 우리 집 뒤에 있는 초롱꽃을 먹을 수 없다면, 나는 죽고 말거예요.”

"if I can't get some of the rapunzel which is in the garden behind our house, to eat, I shall die."

여자를 사랑했던 남자는 이렇게 생각했어요.

The man, who loved her, thought

"아내가 죽도록 내버려둘순 없어, 무슨 일이 있더라도, 초롱꽃을 가지고와서 아내에게 줘야겠어.”

"Sooner than let your wife die, bring her some of the rapunzel yourself, let it cost you what it will."
