하고 노여운 얼굴로 마녀가 말했습니다.

said she with angry look,

"내 정원으로 내려가 도둑처럼 내 초롱꽃을 훔치다니.

"to descend into my garden and steal my rapunzel like a thief?

당신은 그로 인해 고통 받게 될겁니다!”

You shall suffer for it!"

남자가 대답하였습니다.

"Ah," answered he,

“아, 자비로움을 정의보다 먼저 생각해 주십시오.

"let mercy take the place of justice.

제가 이런 마음을 먹은 것은 꼭 필요한 일이기 때문입니다.

I only made up my mind to do it out of necessity.

저의 아내가 창가에서 당신의 초롱꽃을 보고,

My wife saw your rapunzel from the window,

꽃을 먹고싶다는 식욕이 들었고,

and felt such a longing for it

먹지 못하면 죽게될지도 모르겠다고 말했기 때문이예요.”

마녀는 분노를 누그러뜨리고 그에게 말하였습니다.

Then the enchantress allowed her anger to be softened, and said to him,

“당신이 말한 대로라면,

"If the case be as you say,

제가 당신이 원하는만큼 충분한 초롱꽃을 가져갈 수 있도록 허락해야겠네요,

I will allow you to take away with you as much rapunzel as you will,

대신 한 가지 조건이 있습니다.

only I make one condition,

당신은 당신의 아내가 낳게 될 아이를 나에게 주어야 합니다.

you must give me the child which your wife will bring into the world;

그 아이는 좋은 대접을 받을 것이고,

it shall be well treated,

그리고 나는 어머니처럼 그 아이를 돌볼 것입니다."

and I will care for it like a mother."

남자는 공포에 질려 모든 말에 동의했고,

The man in his terror consented to everything,

아이가 남자와 여자의 집에 태어났을 때,

and when the little one came to them,

마녀가 일순 나타났습니다.

the enchantress appeared at once,

마녀는 아이에게 초롱꽃이라는 이름을 붙여주었고,

gave the child the name of Rapunzel,

부부에게서 아이를 빼앗았습니다.

and took it away with her.
