GGG Spot: DC Comics’ ‘Rebirth’

Listen Later

For a while now we have been hearing so much about DC’s Rebirth, Rebirth, Rebirth, and more REBIRTH! After the mixed bag that we call New 52, DC has been actively telling us that it’s not a “reboot,” yet no more information was let out.
That was until WonderCon 2016! DC let it all out with the stories, focuses, new characters, and talent behind the next big chapter in the DC Universe! Chris, Jeff, Tyler, and Ashley discuss what they think about all the announcements!

The New 52 launched in 2011 to make a more concrete platform for the characters we have grown to love through these years. A lot of origin stories have been inconsistent by having so many people write for these characters. To add depth or to leave their mark everyone wants to make an arc have a beginning, a middle, and an end.
What’s not to love about writing your own version of your favorite character’s origin story? Well, for people who were getting into comics after the insane success of the X-Men, Spider-Man, Dark Knight Trilogy, and now Marvel Cinematic Universe, I would imagine things were down right overwhelming.
I can’t blame DC for wanting to relaunch their stories. It would be a lot easier to draw peoples’ attention to buying comics when everyone can start together at issue one. That being said, so many inane things were changed from the past universe, stories were half-assed and boring, and worst of all, it was failing in sales. It started out fine, but of course it would. They were erasing 70+ years of history, however they couldn’t expect it to keep doing well if the first few problems I mentioned kept being present as the issues went on and on. My biggest complaint STILL is Superman and Wonder Woman being together…

Now with Rebirth coming, we can finally have another Crisis-like story added to the DCU. Well, that is my theory. It may be better than the New 52 “plan”, or it may come back and bite them in the ass. The important thing is that it seems like they really have an understanding that the talent behind the pages can either make or break someone’s connection to a comic. Of course we have big names that everyone recognizes, but what about all these independent comic book creators? It seems DC is really taking steps toward getting the best writers and artists on their team once again.
Not only did DC announce on the 26th that there will be twice-monthly series distributed, but also a new lower price on the covers. Huge news, and hopefully something that will bring them more sales. It is very important to buy comics, not only for Marvel or DC, but in general. This whole Marvel vs. DC, Skybound vs. IDW, etc. is all bullshit. A comic bought is a win for all comic publishers. Please support your local comic book store, and if one is not available, shop on Comixology.
Back to Rebirth! At WonderCon last weekend, DC Comic’s Co-Publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee announced the talent, the lower price of $2.99, information on each comic run, and also the “New Talent Development Workshops for Aspiring Writers and Artists.” Very, very cool news. This will definitely help DC in the future and independent comic books by teaching them how to tell stories in a very vast fictional universe!
“Our goal is to identify and foster fresh, new voices,” stated DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and bestselling artist, Jim Lee. “The new DC Talent Development Workshops will play a vital role in discovering and developing the next generation of comic talent.”
