This song is about the experience of a young confederate soldier thinking that he might be writing his last letter home before moving on to the front line at Gettysburg. He hopes to return home soon but then finds he is moving on again to the higher realm. He becomes a ghost of Gettysburg. It is important to remember that in all battles and wars that there are invariably two sides, both having someone's sons and daughters.
