The nature of gift giving in the western world stems from concepts clearly established in the bible. From the scriptural point of view, Creation, Life, Eternal life are all gifts that no one is ever worthy of. This is simply the nature of God... the giver of gifts.
The gifts given to Jesus by the Magi (wise men), represented the destiny he would fulfil as the Son of God... these gifts were also symbolic of the gifts he would grant us... the unworthy.
