Proverbs 30:16
the grave, the barren womb, land, which is never satisfied with water, and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’

The entire book of Proverbs is known for its riddles, its hidden sayings, its ability to wrap layered truths up in simple enigmas or parables. This vision of the book is laid out in chapter 1:6 and here we are at the end of the book in chapter 30:16 and it doesn’t disappoint with this beauty of a riddle: the grave, the barren womb, land, which is never satisfied with water, and fire, all four of these things will never say, ‘That’s enough I’m don’t want anymore.’
First of all, what a list! It seems like these four things have nothing in common, but the list is so intriguing, that it makes you ask, what was Solomon ultimately getting at here?
So, in the tradition of the Great King Solomon, RIDDLE ME THIS: What do these four have in common besides the fact they never say ‘enough’? I’m going to name them again the way I’d interpret them: The Bottomless Grave, the Begging Womb, the Barren Land, and the Burning Fire.” Yea they all say, “Gimmie some more” but what else do they have in common?
You ready?
Well, these four aren’t just insatiable appetites—but the bottomless grave, begging womb, barren land and burning fire all are Transformers: all of them seek to change what they take in.
What else? The bottomless grave, the begging womb, the barren land and the burning fire are all Thresholds, the liminal space between two worlds—death and life, emptiness and fullness, dry and fruitful, fuel and energy...
Ahhh we’re cooking now! Anything else?
I’m glad you asked! The bottomless grave, the begging womb, the barren land and the burning fire (let’s just call them the 4 B’s) They’re Takers, with arms wide open, each of these elements will take on more of what comes their way, turning nothing back!
And finally, the 4 B’s are Thirsty! Their desires are never quenched! Which reflects the various hungers of the human heart. The bottomless grave, the begging womb, the barren land, and the burning fire—they all tell us the same thing: life runs on longing, on desire and God knows that. That's why the Bible DOESN’T say, “If any man lacks wisdom let him go to school.” No! It says, “Let him go directly to God and from the vein of desire simply ‘ask’ and it will be given!” Because the vein of desire is the real threshold—it’s the place where what we take, God transforms, and our thirst finds its true satisfaction in Him.”
Here’s the point:“Only God can turn our Thresholds into gateways, change our Takers into givers, orchestrate our Transformations into testimonies, and turn our Thirsts into Living Water!”
🙏🏽 Prayer
“Lord, satisfy my thirst and transform my desires in You.”
💡 Today’s Challenge:
It’s very simple. Focus on your desire. What is your heart really saying? "Gimme some more." You want more? God knows. And if you connect and align with God, you may see that desire come to pass.
