Givers Always Gain

Listen Later

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” -H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

One of the largest differentiators in BNI, making it so different from other professional business networking organizations, is known as Givers Gain. These two words are the foundation of BNI, and play a huge role in the success of its members. Today, we want to chat about the importance of this principle, and why you should ensure you are utilizing this key principle effectively.

What does it mean?

BNI founder, Dr. Ivan Misner, created Givers Gain as a way for entrepreneurs to be a part of something bigger than themselves. This principle seeks to reaffirm that our lives have significant meaning, and through the bonds and connections made, we become better versions of ourselves.

BNI is not about what others can do for you, but what can you do for others. Misner writes, “Within a community or a network, the ripple effect that takes place from this philosophy can influence hundreds or thousands of people. In fact, I believe it can influence the world. Giving is contagious. Conscious giving can be infinite.”

The benefits of giving

We have all heard the saying “Giving is better than receiving,” and this is supported by science. There are many benefits that impact not just your business, but your overall health and happiness as well. Studies show that “people who hold some kind of spiritual belief that emphasizes goodness, love, kindness and sharing with others feel happier and live more fulfilled, healthier and longer lives,” said Juan Riestra, MD, chief of psychiatry at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center.

The act of helping someone is rewarding, and makes people feel fulfilled and valued. In seeking ways to support people who are important in your life, you will likely reap the rewards in return.

Here are some ways to implement Givers Gain into your own business community:

  • Provide a referral to two other business you know, where they have the opportunity to connect and grow together.
  • Offer mentoring or advice to a business or individual in need of your expertise. This might mean mentoring another BNI member or offering to speak to a team of people involved in a nonprofit organization.
  • Do you know, or are you involved in a local business group that could benefit from your knowledge? Take advantage of the opportunity to help others succeed and grow by utilizing tools that have worked in your own experiences.
  • Support groups within your community. Making valuable connections can happen anywhere, and in supporting the efforts of others, you may open the door to a professional relationship you otherwise wouldn’t have made.

It is important to consider how practicing Givers Gain will benefit you and your business. Once you commit to this value, and implement it into your life, you will be sure to find success both professionally and personally.
