On October 31st, high in the Wyoming mountains, a routine training flight ended in tragedy when an aircraft exploded on impact with a glacier-fed lake over 600 feet deep. The call went out to Dive Rescue International for an elite recovery team—and among those answering was David Burnell, Air Force veteran and member of the Rapid City Dive Rescue and Search & Rescue teams.

The mission was as unforgiving as the environment:

* Bring all divers home alive.

* Recover the victims.

* Remove the wreckage to protect the pristine lake.

The cold, high-altitude water, violent surface winds, and hazardous debris made every step a fight against the elements and time. David was tasked with lift bag operations when he faced his first underwater recovery—a 300-pound victim wrapped in cables, already lost for days.

As the man’s lifeless body began to drag him deeper, David faced an impossible choice in seconds. Let go and fail the mission, or hold on and risk being pulled into the depths. The following struggle tested his training, will, and very survival.
