Deadline reports that MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to direct. The movie is entitled RoboCop Returns, and will see the original writers of the first movie, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, producing and exec producing, respectively, with Justin Rhodes - co-writer of Tim Miller’s new Terminator film, rewriting the script. The rewrite to the Neumeier and Miner script was written years ago as and was planned as a sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s original. The plot as detailed y Deadline: anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.
Deadline reports that Chadwick Boseman is reteaming with Joe and Anthony Russo to produce and star in the action thriller 17 Bridges from STXfilms. Brian Kirk (Luther, Game of Thrones) has signed on to direct from a script by Adam Mervis. The story follows a disgraced NYPD detective (Boseman) who, after being thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, is given a shot at redemption. No release date has been set.
Variety reports that LeBron James and writer Steve Mallory, along with James’ SpringHill Entertainment, have sold an untitled comedy pitch to Paramount Players, with LeBron in early talks to star. This would mark James’ second movie role after playing himself in the Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck. The movie is described as a body swapping comedy and no release date has been revealed.
THR reports that Rob Liefeld's comic property Prophet has been acquired by Studio 8, with a movie being placed in development in the hopes of creating a new franchise. The story sees John Prophet, described as the anti-Captain America, whose a DNA-enhanced super soldier from the World War II era who awakens in our time after being put in cryogenic freeze for a future mission. Unfortunately, he was not supposed to wake until years down the road, making Prophet a fish out of water, spending his time in search of a mission that does not exist.
