Glassing with Jess Johnson

Listen Later

"Glassing is the art of sitting on a high spot and looking for wildlife." That gem of wisdom comes from Artemis co-founder Jess Johnson, who shares some of her best game-spotting tricks with us in this episode. Plus, what you need to know when scoping out your optics. (See what we did there? #opticspun)

3:00 - Quarantine Us: Dishes = low priority; Mud season = meh; Comfy overalls = a harbinger of changing standards of what you will and won't wear in public

10:00 - What is glassing? It's the art of sitting on a high spot and looking for wildlife... OR, hunting with your eyes, not with your feet

10:30 - How do you pick a glassing spot? Let's talk about mule deer for a moment.

12:00 - Wisdom from Brad Brooks of Argali - Mule deer know their home ground... they come back to it time and time again.

13:00 - Look for the best vantage point... look for a high spot without tree obstruction. Spots that overlook basins are winners.

15:00 - Good glassing involves sitting and waiting. Get comfy.

16:30 - Mule deer feed in the morning... then they mosey around. Moving mule deer = easier to spot than bedded deer. Best times to glass are early mornings and 3 p.m. onwards.

20:00 - Improving your eye for game: Investigate every twig/rock... look closely. And if you see nothing, wait and look again. Movement is a giveaway.

24:00 - Glassing is sort of like Where's Waldo... your eye gets sharper at finding the details that clue you into game the more time you spend out there.

28:00 - Go glassing in the off-season. Bring coffee/donuts. Again on being comfy.

32:00 - Optics... they're particularly useful in Western hunting. It's probably not the equipment to skimp on.

34:00 - Jess uses Mavens

35:00 - Optics specs - magnification by objective size. Higher magnification means your field of view gets smaller.

38:00 - Glassing arm exhaustion is a real thing. Prop yourself up on something... Jess has a winning ball cap trick.

39:30 - Binoculars vs. spotting scopes

42:00 - Other good makes: Zeiss, Vortex, Swarovski, Maven

43:00 - The app-adapted scope is a pretty fun luxury

45:30 - Know how to fit your binos to your face and how to adjust them
