Professor Terry Spithill (Co-Director of AgriBio, La Trobe University) on enhancing global food security by improving animal health.
There is projected growth of the world's population to reach nine billion people by about 2050. That population growth will lead to increase demand for meat and milk products.
A number of concerns stand in our way. We have a water shortage. Livestock grazing is a very heavy demand on water. Livestock are also thought to be responsible for approximately 18% of greenhouse gas emissions.
We must get smarter at raising livestock to improve productivity. Professor Spithill talks about how he believes we can significantly improve productivity by the health of animal internationally.
