Glory Connection — In the Midst of the Storm

Listen Later

The prophet Ezekiel begins his book with the glorious encounter of the heavenly Chariots of Fire.

"1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. ... 4 As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness round about it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming bronze." (Ezekiel 1:1, 4 RSV)

Some years after Israel’s arrival in Babylon through the captivity led by Nebuchadnezzar, the prophet Ezekiel received a prophecy.  As he stood on the banks of the river Kevar, the heavens were opened and he was shown visions of God.  These visions are known in Talmudic literature as Merkavah (Chariot) or Ma’aseh Merkavah (Account of the Chariot).

Ezekiel's vision was so lofty that the Artscroll commentary provides this disclaimer.

“In this vision, supernatural concepts are described in human terms.  ..., they cannot be understood literally nor, in our spiritual poverty, are we equipped even to glimpse at their inner meaning."

In his heavenly encounter, Ezekiel sees a stormy wind, a great cloud and fire  that conceal God's Presence.  In the midst of this, we see angelic forces  issuing forth from God's Presence.  You are invited to join me for “Glory Connection — In the Midst of the Storm” on Thursday, December  12 @ 7:30 PM - Breath of the Spirit - 1531 S Sinclair St, Anaheim, CA.
