In this episode of the Gman Reviews Podcast, I review Captain America: Liberty’s Torch, a Marvel audiobook that was not quite what I expected.

Going in, I thought this would be a more traditional Captain America action story with Steve Rogers and Falcon taking on villains in a straightforward superhero adventure. Instead, Liberty’s Torch is much more of a political thriller about extremism, militia movements, corrupted patriotism, racism, and what Captain America is supposed to represent.

I talk about the Liberty’s Torch militia, Falcon’s role in the story, the trial element, the book’s more nuanced view of militias through the character Barry, and why I think the story both succeeds and falls short in how it handles Captain America’s moral voice.

I also get into one of my bigger criticisms: the book has a strong setup for a classic Captain America speech about pain, responsibility, and hatred, but I do not think it fully delivers that moment.

If you are interested in a darker, more political Captain America story, this audiobook may be worth checking out — but if you mainly want nonstop superhero action, this one may surprise you.

Felicity from Evil West is more than just a vampire villain.
