देवनदी गंगा पर्वतराज हिमालय की ज्येष्ठ पुत्री थीं और स्वर्गलोक में निवास करती थीं। 

जब महाराज सगर के साथ हजार पुत्र कपिल मुनि के क्रोध की अग्नि में भस्म हो गए तब उनकी आत्मा के उद्धार के लिए इक्ष्वाकु-वंशी राजाओं ने कई पीढ़ियों तक देवी गंगा को पृथ्वी लोक पर लाने के लिए तप किया। 

अंततः महाराज भगीरथ ने ब्रह्मदेव को अपने तप से प्रसन्न कर देवी गंगा को पृथ्वी लाने के लिए मना लिया और फिर भगवान शंकर को प्रसन्न कर स्वर्ग से तीव्र वेग से अवतरित होती गंगा की गति अवरोधित करने के लिए मनाया। 

इस प्रकार देवी गंगा स्वर्ग से पृथ्वी लोक पर अवतरित हुईं और संसार के कल्याण के लिए यहीं रह गयीं। 

Ganga

Ganga was the eldest daughter of Himalaya and lived-in heaven. 

When 60 thousand sons of King Sagar were burned by Kapila muni, multiple generations of Ikshvaku Kings performed penance to bring the divine river to earth.

Eventually it was Bhagirath who succeeded in bringing Ganga to earth by first pleasing Brahmadev to release Ganga from heaven and then convincing Shivaji to hold the fall of the mighty river when she descended from heaven.

Thus, Ganga came to earth and stayed here.
