With Gentleness and Respect

Fear of offending someone is the number one reason a lot of Christians give for staying quiet about Jesus. It's not a new problem — the early church faced suspicion, ridicule, and outright persecution. So Peter gave them a different way to respond.

• Why Peter isn't prescribing an evangelism method so much as describing a life so visibly different that it provokes curiosity
• The instruction to always be ready to give a reason for your hope — but notice it only comes up when someone asks
• Why "gentleness and respect" rules out anything pushy, obnoxious, or condescending
• How our everyday lives either make the gospel credible to the people watching, or work against it

Reflection: What is the source of your hope? Think of a time someone shared their faith with you in a way that felt pushy or judgmental — what made it feel that way? Now think of a time it felt genuine. What was different?
