Today’s Scripture:
Micah 7:18b NIV (the b clause)
... You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.
Have you ever needed mercy? Instead, you get anger. Yes, most of us can relate to anger instead of mercy. We are more prone to being angry than showing mercy. Mercy requires forgiveness; it requires seeing beyond the fault and seeing the regret of the offender, even if you're still dealing with the ramifications of the offense.
Christians are people who live and walk in the mercies of God, yet we find it hard to show mercy. For some reason, we feel like if we show mercy, we lose. But mercy is not losing; mercy is undeserving grace. The person doesn't meet its requirements, but you give it anyway. God is so above us that his mercy flows toward us daily. He has the right to be angry with us because we don't daily. Yet, in his mercy, he does not stay angry with us forever; his posture is one of mercy. Not only is God merciful, but he delights in showing mercy.
God gets excited! He gets like a kid on Christmas morning, anticipating what Santa left under the Christmas tree; that's how God is when it comes to showing mercy. He wants to lavish it on us. This should encourage us and excite us that no matter what we have done wrong, God will not stay angry forever, but he delights in showing mercy to us.
Here's the thing: even God's judgment is an expression of his mercy; the Bible says whom the Lord loves, he chastens, or he corrects, which means God's correction and judgment are his mercy towards us. When we reject God's mercy, that's the only time we will not experience his love.
Indeed, God does not stay angry forever. Can we, as Christians who have experienced God's mercy, even when we do not deserve it, find it in our hearts to be merciful to those who offend us? Let's be careful to give mercy as we experience God's mercy because if we don't, we condemn ourselves. The Bible says, "Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy" (Mat. 5:7). That is from the beatitudes, in other words, the attitude that we should have as Christians and how we should live. God delights in showing mercy, so let us also show mercy toward each other.
