God Gives Provision and Life

2 Samuel 16-18

1. God’s Provisions are Good and Right (16:1-4)

a. Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in

glory in Christ Jesus.”

b. Genesis 22:14, “So Abraham called the name of the place, ‘The Lord will provide.’”

(Jehovah Jireh)

2. God Corrects those He loves (16:5-14)

a. vs 10-11, “If he is cursing because the Lord has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who then shall

say, ‘Why have you done so?’” And David said to Abishai and to all his servants…’Leave

him alone, and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.”

b. vs 12, “It may be that the Lord will look on the wrong done to me, and that the Lord will

repay me with good for his cursing today.”

c. vs 14“David arrived weary at the Jordan. And there he refreshed himself.”

d. Psalm 3:3, 5, “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the li􀅌er of my head.

I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.”

3. God Works in the Details (16:15-23)

4. God Demonstrates His Control (17:1-14)

a. vs 14, “For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the

Lord might bring harm upon Absalom.”

5. God Provides Protec􀆟on (17:15-29)

6. God’s Compassion on Display (18:1-5)

a. vs 5: “And the king ordered Joab, and Abishai, and I􀆩ai, ‘Deal gently for my sake with the

young man Absalom.’ And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the

commanders about Absalom.”

b. “but God shows his love for us in that while we were s􀆟ll sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

7. God’s Power Defeats the Enemy (18:6-8)

a. Psalm 3:6-7, “I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves

against me all around. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies

on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked.”

b. vs 8: “the forest devoured more people that day than the sword.”

8. God’s Way is Victory (18:9-31)

a. vs 9, “Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a

great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven

and earth, while the mule that was under him went on.”

b. Psalm 3:8, “Salva􀆟on belongs to the Lord”

c. vs 33, “would I had died instead of you”

d. “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be

the propi􀆟a􀆟on for our sins.” 1 John 4:10
