God Has Left the Building…Maybe: Part 1

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in?”  ~2 Samuel 17:4-5

Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann summarizes our scripture reading for this week in his biblical commentary on First and Second Samuel:

David proposes to build a temple.  Temple building is undoubtedly a mixed act of genuine piety and self-serving legitimation.  These verses reflect what must have been an honorable dispute in Israel concerning the tension between God’s freedom and God’s presence.  The temple guarantees God’s presence but at the same time militates against God’s freedom.

This week I will begin a two-part sermon on what it means to live in the tension that Professor Bruggemann describes.  Sometime its hard to see God at work in the world, so it begs the question, is God in the house or not?  We will explore that “honorable dispute” looking for places where we see God at work in public life.
