I. Christophany, Types and Shadows of Christ
Melchizedek - Genesis 14:18-20
Captain of the Lord’s Army - Joshua 5:13-14
Jesus the Rock in the Wilderness - 1 Corinthians 10:4
The Word of Creation - Genesis 1, John 1
Types and Shadows of Christ - Joseph, Moses, David… Hagar.
Hagar?
Hagar is a type of suffering servant that points ultimately to the ministry of Jesus. Isaiah 53:1-4
II. Sometimes you feel like you need to help God out
Genesis 12 - God tells Abram to follow him and that he will bless him with a multitude of descendants and that all nations will be blessed through what God does through him.
Abraham and Sarah are getting old and God does not seem to be in much of a hurry to fulfill his promises.
Genesis 16 - Sarah has an idea of how to help God out - Abraham can have a baby with Hagar her slave.
Sarah immediately regrets the decision.
Hagar runs away.
III. The God Who Sees
Hagar runs away and bumps into God
Genesis 16:13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me (EL ROY),” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”
She is the first theologian in the Old Testament because she names God.
IV. Hagar and the ministry of Jesus
Reflection:
How am I being tempted to take control of areas of my life rather than trusting Jesus and his ways?
How have I hurt others because of my own insecurity, fear, or need to control my circumstances?
