God Is Our Fortress

Listen Later

SCRIPTURE - Psalm 62:5-8 (NIV)

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;

My hope comes from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation;

he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

My salvation and my honor depend on God;

he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your hearts to him,

for God is our refuge.”

Everyone in the ancient world knew what a fortress was. Every major town had one: a place where people could take shelter when enemy armies came to conquer and pillage. Even in the rural areas, there were often fortresses out in the fields, usually an oval stone tower inside a wall that could be sealed from the inside when rivals came to steal the harvest. One of the most well known, and larger, fortresses was Masada near the Dead Sea. I have visited Masada and have coins that were found on the site from Roman times.

The fortress was the place of shelter and security when marauding bands came from neighboring towns or communities to conquer, maim, steal and pillage. We too have our fortresses. They are the things that we believe give our lives security. It can be a great job, our savings and retirement, the friends we have, our health and the fact that we live in a free country. Even addiction and sin can become fortresses in our lives where we find comfort and escape.

David understood that man made fortresses did not shield us from trouble, pain and sorrow. In fact, there is only one individual who can give us real hope, and that is our heavenly Father. “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” David twice repeats the truth that we have only one means of hope and security, and that is our God. There is no other. All other sources of security and hope are illusions subject to change. When trouble comes, they cannot protect us. Jobs can disappear, health can fail, savings can evaporate, but if God is our fortress, we will not be shaken.

In times of pain or sorrow, what we need is someone who we can cry out to. David says, “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” There is nothing we cannot express to God. He is not only our fortress, but He is compassionate and loving and caring. He loves us with an everlasting love and has the power to help us walk through times of fear and difficulty. In the midst of difficulty, He can give our souls rest and hope.

I have met people who put their security in the wrong places and when trouble came, their lives collapsed. Ironically, they often blame God. Don’t put your ladder against the wrong wall. Put your trust, hope and security in God alone, for He is the source of all hope.

PRAYER

Father, I declare today that You are my fortress and my hope. Help me to put all my trust and confidence in You, and thank You that You are my rock, my salvation and my refuge. I give to You my pain, fears and difficulties today and ask that You would give me rest for my soul. Amen.
