God Is Up To Something

God Is Up To Something
He may very well have been any African king: ego-tripping and wine bibbing. The only thing is that the story is set in the Middle East. Did the Bible not say:
Woe to the land whose king was a servant and whose princes feast in the morning. Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth and whose princes eat at a proper time— for strength and not for drunkenness. (Ecclesiastes 10:16-17)
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
(Proverbs 20:1)
He was the king, powerful but insecure. Fancy giving a child a loaded gun! He surrounded himself with folks like him. What serious-minded soul parties for months on end? How is it that the ones who have rule are babies at best?
In Esther 1, we have a king who was not just tripping; he extended it to his wife. She was summoned to do a beauty parade. She saw through it and refused. The only thing, he was the king, and you did not say no to the king. You would incur the king’s wrath. His ego was bruised and armed with advice from his cronies; the queen was deposed.
On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him – Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Karkas – to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at. But when the attendants delivered the king’s command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger. (Esther 1:10-12)
The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honour. “For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world. (1 Samuel 2:7-8)
The thing to note, however, is that the events had God working behind the scenes. Vashti had to be deposed so Esther could become queen and her people could be emancipated. If your name is Vashti, you will do well to check if God is making a demand on you even if it does not make sense.
