God Said, God Made, And It Was Good

Listen Later

Every time I re-read Scripture new insights come to me. I am currently reading through the Bible in 90 days. If you have never read the whole Bible I would encourage you to do so. Many people use a reading plan that takes them through in a year. I have decided to read it four times this year in 90 day increments. There is so much to understand and learn.

I love the opening chapters of the Bible with the account of creation. Genesis 1:1-2 describes the scene: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

And then over the next six days we read this refrain. God said and it came to be. God said let there be light and there was light, Let the water teem with living creatures and it was so. He literally created by His word. He spoke and as He spoke it came to be and then in each case we read that “God saw that it was good.” He spoke, He made, and it was good.

This got me thinking about all the counsel of God we have in the Scriptures. Not only has he spoken in creation but He speaks to us on a daily basis when we read His words to us. Much of what He says goes against the grain of our culture and its practices. But He always says, “it is good.”

As David says in Psalm 119:89-96, “Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts…To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless.”

When God speaks he speaks truth and it is always good. We need that reminder each day because His counsel and commands are so different than those of our society. Every time we do what is right in the eyes of God rather than what is right in our own lives we find life. When we don’t, we pay the price. As David says, “To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless.”

God speaks, God creates and it is always good. In the beginning and in our own daily lives.

Father, thank you that there is no limit to your perfection, goodness and wisdom. Help me to live each day by your precepts for they give me life and save me from myself. Amen.
