God with Us Brings Joy

Listen Later

Our “Advent” sermon series will continue today with a focus on “Joy.” The Websters of the world will define Joy like this: a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. John Piper would extend this by saying that: Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as He causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the Word and in the world.

In our Bibles, we see both happiness and joy, and it is hard to make the distinctions that I will propose in the message today. One may say that we are splitting hairs by seeking to differentiate happiness and joy when it comes to Biblical definitions. In our context today, we can manufacture happiness for a time, but true Joy is eternal and only comes from God.

As a reminder, the messages in this series will cover how God with us brings: Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace before finishing up with showing how God with us is Jesus. I pray that you will celebrate the real Reason for the season!

Our message for today is titled: “God with Us Brings Joy.”

Our points will be:

  1. You Can’t Manufacture Joy
  2. Seek Joy Over Happiness
  3. God’s Plan is Infinitely Greater than Ours
  4. Main Scripture: John 3:26-30

    Supporting Texts: Isaiah 3:9, Psalm 75:6-7, 1 Corinthians 3:5, 1 Corinthians 4:7, John 1:19-23, Hosea 2:16-20, Philippians 2:10-11, Hebrews 3:3-4

Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions:

    • Can we manufacture Joy? Explain.
    • Explain the difference between happiness and Joy.
    • Currently, are eternal things more important than temporal things? Please explain your answer.
    • Why should eternal things be more important to us?
    • Why do we struggle to understand that God’s plan is infinitely greater than ours?
    • ...more
