God’s House or a Marketplace?

“Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” - John 2 verse 16.

When Jesus walked into the temple, He didn’t find prayer or worship. He found a marketplace — people selling animals, exchanging money, and making a profit in a place meant for sacred things. With righteous anger, Jesus overturned the tables and drove them out. God’s house was not a business. It was meant to be a place of reverence.

By calling it “My Father’s house,” Jesus wasn’t just being poetic. He was claiming to be the Son of God — something the religious leaders clearly understood and strongly rejected. Later, after they persistently refused His message, Jesus stopped calling it “My house” and said, “Your house is left to you desolate” (Matthew 23:38).

That’s a warning for us. When we treat what is holy as common, when church becomes routine or self-focused, we risk driving away God’s presence. A building can still have services and songs, but if God isn’t honored, it’s spiritually empty.

Today, Jesus is still looking for young people who will worship Him with sincerity. Going to church shouldn’t be about habits or appearances. The gospel is not a business. It’s about surrender, truth, and relationship.

Let this be our prayer: “Lord, cleanse the temple of my heart. Remove anything that distracts me from You. Make my life a holy place for Your presence.”
