God’s Impartial Judgment: Religion Without Obedience Cannot Save (Romans 2) | Leon Morris

Listen Later

Deep Dive into The Epistle to the Romans by Leon Morris - Romans 2

In his commentary on Romans 2, Leon Morris explains the Apostle Paul's argument regarding the universal condemnation of sin, focusing primarily on the Jewish people. Paul asserts that those who judge others are equally guilty because they commit the same offenses. Although the Jews possessed the Mosaic law and proudly viewed themselves as superior guides to the blind Gentiles, merely possessing the law did not exempt them from God's wrath. God's judgment is completely impartial and based on truth, meaning that ethnic privilege offers no protection. Instead, God's patience and forbearance are strictly intended to lead all people toward repentance rather than provide an excuse for stubborn disobedience.

Morris highlights that God will judge everyone according to their works and the light they have received. The Jews will be judged by the law they were given, as hearing the law is insufficient without actually obeying it. Conversely, the Gentiles, who lack the formal Mosaic code, will be judged by the moral law written on their hearts. Their innate ability to sometimes do what the law requires demonstrates that they possess a conscience, and their internal thoughts will either accuse or excuse them on the final day of judgment, which God will execute through Jesus Christ.

Finally, Paul dismantles the Jewish reliance on outward ceremonies like circumcision. Morris notes that physical circumcision is rendered entirely meaningless if a person breaks the law. True Jewish identity and true circumcision are matters of the inward heart, brought about by the Spirit rather than literal conformity to a written code. Paul emphasizes that external religious privileges are worthless without inward transformation, proving all humanity needs justification.
