The Essence of Our Foundation
Love is the heart of Christianity. When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He said the greatest commandment is to Love the Lord your God will all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. The second one, is for us to love our neighbor as ourselves. This is the foundation of Christianity. Without it as the root, as our foundation in life, then we are just pretending to be Christians.
Structure of Love
How do we know if we love others the way God intends for us to? Ultimately it comes down to us looking to God’s Word to teach us how to treat others. That understanding all comes by learning the nature of God.
In Romans chapter 13 Paul writes that love is the fulfillment of the law. If we love people the way God wants us to, we are going to behave the way God expects us to. God is the foundation of love because it is His nature. So, if we are going to treat others lovingly, we need to do it in accordance with His nature and His character.
Sin (essentially) is doing anything against the nature of God. Rightness is doing anything in accordance with the nature of God, and God’s nature is love. So, it others requires some grasp of the nature of God.
Jesus and Us
Jesus came to earth, to die for us. That had everything to do for us, not Him. He had nothing to gain for Himself by coming. He was already with God. Jesus came to earth so that we could one day be with God. See, love is also about thinking of others.
If you have a baby, you do not just sit the baby down and never pick them up, never talk to them, never feed them. Babies cannot feed themselves and do everything for themselves. Unfortunately, with Christians sometimes, we forget how much attention and nurturing children need. We sit new Christians in the pew for services after they are baptized, and we look at them and say, “Okay you are a Christian now” and we tell them that they can do everything on their own now. That’s not loving them!
Love is about thinking of others. Consider what others need and help them. Show them the same love God shows you.
Have you ever learned things you didn’t put into practice? Are you treating others the way God intended for us to? Let me know, I would like to hear from you!
