Life begins when your boss is killed.
For five years, Cason Cole has been a chew toy for a god. He walked away from his wife and son and devoted his life to a predator who holds nothing and no-one dear. Now, as the man he loves and hates lies dying at his feet, the explosion still ringing in his ears, Cason is finally free.
For centuries, the swarming gods of the Earth were content to lounge in Heaven, forgetting the mortals they left behind; but 30 years ago, the all-powerful "Usurper" ejected them all, to a man and woman. Now it's back to the bad old days: cults and sycophants, and the terrible retribution the gods visit on those who defy them. None of which is going to stop Cason from getting back what's his....

strangely, one of the best books I've ever read
Let me put it this way, I was in a car accident, we crashed into a river. The book was on the dashboard. The car flipped upside down into the river. Four hours later I was back in the river looking for this book that I had half finished. I was so sad that I couldn't find that I got online and bought the kindle edition. I would recommend this book to anyone with warped humor, love of religions and culture, love of vulgarity, gore and violence. This is one of my favorite books and I am excited for the additions and hope they are all soon coming.
Decent story if you're a character reader, might wanna skip if you're a plot person.
This book was alright for the price point. It's a fairly interesting, tongue in cheek, world building, urban fantasy genre that reads smoothly and has a pretty good pace/modulation.
I didn't care much for the main character/protagonist, kinda some ole troup there, but a few of the support characters were spectacular. I did like the variety of the God's and Monsters that showed up in the story, they had great idiosyncrasies and different powers, but I felt their motives and rationale was poorly developed or almost non-existent. Despite the variety of the God's & Monsters and their powers, they all seemed to be focused on pursuing a hedonistic lifestyle after they fell to Earth. None of them had any ambitions other than the Devil, who only shows up at the end; and even he is interested in the same thing he is always interested in (with regards to his character in other works of fiction/literature.)
I really like Wendig's prose and style in regards to figures of speeches, similes, metaphors etc, but there was a FLAGRANT amount of context that I did not care for. Wendig even takes it a step further and includes subtext for the context. It's usually only a few paragraph here or there, but when you're reading a few pages of context, background or anecdotes stories, and then it goes into a few paragraphs of subtext, I just don't care because I didn't find the subcontext to be engaging. I found it annoying, but not off-putting. Some of the characters ramble on in their inner monologue about things that happened in the past that doesn't impact the storyline and I found myself almost skimming over the lines to where the plot progresses.
I'm not into that kind of writing, some people are.
You're either a plot person or a character person as far as stories are concerned. I'm a plot person.
