God's Promised Spirit

Listen Later

God's people have waited since the days of Moses (~1400 BC) for God to pour out his Spirit upon all people (Numbers 11:29). This hope hangs heavy as God's people fail to keep God's covenants over the next many centuries.
Joel 2:28-29 reminds God's people of this hope and affirms that the promise is still valid (~600 BC). Tragically, the people ignored Joel and judgment fell upon Jerusalem in 597-586. The city was destroyed and the people were scattered.
Psalm 47 helps us understand that we cannot fulfill our mission if we are left to ourselves. How are we going to bring the princes of the earth to exalt our great God?
The Apostle Peter told the crowd gathered 50 days after the resurrection that God was pouring the Holy Spirit out and would do so for all who are far off! (This means US!) Jesus told us to ask for the Spirit in Luke 11:9-13 and promised his Father would give the Spirit to us!
Lutherans and salvation? Historically, Lutherans emphasize a “process model” for salvation. We baptize our babies, raise them in church, confess the creeds, and expect that church members will grow in a saving relationship with Jesus. This works for most of us, and yet it is worth asking, “Am I trusting myself or Jesus for my salvation?” Recommit yourself to trusting Jesus alone!
Lutherans and the Holy Spirit? Historically, Lutherans are very shy about even wanting deeper experiences of the Holy Spirit’s work within us. Repent and ask! How do we ask? “Lord Jesus, forgive me of being afraid of all you want to give me. You bought my freedom when you died for me. My life is yours! Fill me with your Holy Spirit and begin to teach me gently about our new life in your kingdom. Amen.”
