God‘s Promises and His Power: From the Lessons From The Exodus Devo series

Listen Later

In chapter 6 of Exodus we learn two things about God. First, that He keeps His promises and second that He has the power to pull it off. A God who is not faithful is not a good God and a God who is without power is an impotent God. Our God is a God of promises and the One who can keep them because of his amazing power. Above all other powers in this world.

In Chapter 6 of Exodus verse one, the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.” That is quite a statement since Pharaoh, the king of Egypt had absolutely no incentive to let his slaves go. They were the backbone of his workforce and free labor at that. He had all the power and they had none. And now God was going to show His power.

But we have to back up a minute because this was all about God keeping his promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob years before. So, God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.”

It is not that God woke up that day and remembered his promise. No. In Genesis 15:14-15, God had told Abraham that “your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. “But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves and afterward they will come out with great possessions.” Now just as He had promised, God was going to fulfill his promise on schedule, on time and decisively.

Could He do that in the face of Pharaoh’s intransigence and power? Yes. He told Moses to say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore, with uplifted hand, to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”

Indeed He can. He is the Lord and no circumstance, no individual, nothing will stop God from being faithful to His promises. That is a truth that you can meditate on today as you think about your circumstances and God’s many promises to you in Scripture.

Father. I thank you that you are a God who keeps every promise and that you have the power to do so. Today I trust you to be faithful to me as you have promised. And let me experience your great power. Amen.
