Going Back To Smallville

Clark wanted a little old-fashioned romance, but he DEFINITELY wasn’t prepared for this version of Lois Lane! On this episode of Going Back to Smallville, our Smallville rewatch podcast and series retrospective, we’re talking Season 9, Episode 13, “Persuasion,” and we absolutely LOVED this one! When a new form of Kryptonite gives Clark the power of persuasion, one innocent comment turns Lois into a 1950s housewife, complete with a disastrous home-cooked dinner and some very unexpected wedding plans! Watching Lois act so differently is hilarious, but the real comedy comes from Clark realizing he’s responsible for all of it and immediately regretting what he said. The poor guy just wants his Lois back! We’re also geeking out over the introduction of Gemstone Kryptonite, the chaos it creates for Chloe, and the growing tension between Clark and Zod as the Kandorian storyline takes some serious turns. Between the laughs, the sweet Clark and Lois moments, and the bigger Superman story unfolding, this Valentine’s Day episode was an absolute blast to revisit!

ABOUT GOING BACK TO SMALLVILLE

Going Back to Smallville is our episode-by-episode rewatch of Smallville, following Clark Kent from the pilot all the way through the series finale.

Each week, Matt and Maggie revisit the story, rank the Freak of the Week, dig into continuity, DC Comics references and Easter eggs, and track Clark’s journey toward becoming Superman—with plenty of nostalgia, laughs, tangents, and wonderfully early-2000s weirdness along the way.

Whether you grew up watching Smallville, discovered it later, or just love Superman and DC Comics, come go back to Smallville with us—one episode at a time.

Going Back to Smallville is part of Hopefully Awesome, where we keep things positive, have fun, and geek out over the stuff we love.

We had an absolute blast with this one. On Going Back to Smallville, our Smallville rewatch podcast and series retrospective, we’re revisiting Season 9, Episode 12, “Warrior,” a wonderfully comic-booky episode packed with superhero wish fulfillment, magic, and some very Shazam-inspired energy. We talk about Alec becoming the living version of Warrior Angel, Lois absolutely owning WonderCon in her Amazon princess costume, and why this episode feels like Smallville giving itself permission to just have fun. But the real highlight for us is Clark and Zatanna. Their chemistry is fantastic, Zatanna tempting Clark to embrace a little fantasy is a great character beat, and Clark breaking through her spell because his feelings for Lois are stronger makes the whole thing even better. Add in Chloe getting swept up in her own superhero fantasy and plenty of DC Comics goodness, and “Warrior” ended up being one of the most purely enjoyable episodes we’ve had in a while.

About Going Back to Smallville

Going Back to Smallville is our episode-by-episode rewatch of Smallville, following Clark Kent from the pilot all the way through the series finale.

Each week, Matt and Maggie revisit the story, rank the Freak of the Week, dig into continuity, DC Comics references and Easter eggs, and track Clark’s journey toward becoming Superman — with plenty of nostalgia, laughs, tangents, and wonderfully early-2000s weirdness along the way.

Whether you grew up watching Smallville, discovered it later, or just love Superman and DC Comics, come go back to Smallville with us — one episode at a time.

Going Back to Smallville is part of Hopefully Awesome, where we keep things positive, have fun, and geek out over the stuff we love.

We’re revisiting Season 9’s “Absolute Justice,” and we absolutely LOVED this one. Smallville goes full DC Comics as the Justice Society of America enters the story, bringing Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Stargirl, Checkmate, and a whole lot of superhero history along with them. This two-part event honestly feels more like a Smallville movie than a regular episode, and we’re geeking out over seeing Clark come face-to-face with the generation of heroes that came before him. We talk about Hawkman and Oliver’s wonderfully chaotic rivalry, Kent Nelson’s heartbreaking story as Doctor Fate, the JSA’s legacy, and those HUGE glimpses into Clark’s future as the hero who will lead a new generation. Plus, Martian Manhunter is back, Amanda Waller is pulling the strings, and Smallville suddenly feels like one enormous living DC Universe. This is the kind of episode Going Back to Smallville was made for.

About this video: It’s time to return to where the legend began. Join us as we revisit every episode of *Smallville*, the show that redefined the Superman legacy for a new generation. From Clark Kent’s first days in Smallville to the epic conclusion after ten seasons, we’re covering it all—one week at a time.

Perfect for fans who grew up watching *Smallville* or anyone fascinated by the evolution of Superman, this podcast is your weekly dive into the series that brought the Man of Steel’s origin story to life. Each episode, we break down the plot, rank the “freaks of the week,” dig into the DC references, hunt for Easter eggs, and celebrate the moments that made *Smallville* a cornerstone of superhero television.

Oliver’s past comes back with a bow and a serious grudge. We’re digging into the arrival of the Dark Archer, Oliver’s struggle with the darker side of himself, and how Mia fits into a story that forces him to confront the kind of hero he actually wants to be. Lois and Clark try to navigate being an official couple, while danger keeps finding them in the forms of arrows to the chest and hospital visits from Zod. Disciple gives us plenty to be excited and nervous about heading deeper into Season 9.

Hosted by a married couple who loves geeking out over all things 90s, 00s, and DC Comics, *Going Back to Smallville* is all about keeping things positive, fun, and nostalgic. As part of the "Hopefully Awesome" family, we bring the same humor and enthusiasm that you’ve come to expect from our other shows. So, put on your red and blue, grab your meteor rock detector, and let’s go back to where it all began—one episode at a time!

Things got very Days of Future Past this week. We break down Season 9, Episode 9, “Pandora,” and finally experience the nightmare future Lois has been seeing all season. We LOVED this one. Lois gets dropped into a Metropolis where Zod has won, the sun has turned red, the resistance is barely hanging on, and Clark has become a broken version of himself after losing her. Seeing this world through Lois makes everything hit harder, especially as she reunites with Clark and we learn just how much her disappearance changed him. It has that alternate-future energy we love from stories like Buffy’s “The Wish” and the Terminator movies, where everything has gone horribly wrong and our heroes are fighting from underneath. Add in some HUGE Clark and Lois moments, and “Pandora” has us seriously excited, a little mind-blown, and very ready to see where Smallville Season 9 goes next.

The Wonder Twins are in Smallville!! We’re freaking out over 9x8 “Idol” and the wonderfully absurd decision to bring Zan and Jayna into this universe. Somehow, that’s only half the reason we absolutely LOVE this episode, because Lois and Clark are getting seriously steamy. Lois starts putting the pieces together about Clark and the Blur, Clark gets dangerously close to exposing his secret, and the whole thing builds to Lois realizing that no matter how she feels about the Blur, she can’t stop thinking about Clark. Then she turns around and gives him THAT KISS. We’re talking Wonder Twin powers, Clark becoming a true symbol of hope, Lois nearly discovering everything, and one of our favorite Lois and Clark moments yet. Smallville “Idol” is ridiculous, romantic, and exactly our kind of episode.

We absolutely loved how big, emotional, and downright epic this one felt. For the first time, Clark’s flesh-and-blood father Jor-El is actually in Smallville, giving Clark the chance to come painfully close to knowing the man behind the voice that has guided him for years. We’re talking about Jor-El and Zod’s friendship before everything fell apart, the tragedy that shaped Zod after losing his wife and child, and just how heartbreaking it is watching so many relationships on Krypton end in loss. We definitely missed having Lois around this week, but getting to see more of Krypton before its destruction gave Season 9 a scale we weren’t expecting. And when Clark finally meets Jor-El? This one got us. “Kandor” is a sad episode, but it’s also one of those Smallville stories that makes Clark’s Kryptonian history feel bigger than ever while still bringing everything back home to the Kent Farm.

After years of flirting, fighting, terrible timing, and enough unresolved tension to power all of Metropolis, this episode gives us the moment we’ve been waiting for, and we absolutely loved it. Clark and Lois’ chemistry is basically the heartbeat of the entire episode, from their wonderfully awkward Good Morning Metropolis audition to jealous Clark watching Lois and Oliver together, Lois finally admitting how she really feels about Clark, and that incredible final scene at the Daily Planet. We also get Oliver taking Mia under his wing, bringing Speedy into the Smallville universe, plus Tess and Zod continuing their dangerous game of Kryptonian chess. There’s a lot happening in Smallville 9x6 “Crossfire,” but for us, this one belongs to Clark and Lois. That kiss was a long time coming, and it was absolutely worth the wait.

This one feels less like a typical superhero episode and more like Smallville’s take on Michael Douglas’s The Game. In this episode of our Going Back to Smallville rewatch podcast and series retrospective, Oliver Queen is pushed through a wild, increasingly dangerous game that forces him to confront just how far he’s fallen and whether there’s still a hero underneath all that pain. Chloe’s methods are definitely extreme, Lois gets pulled into the chaos, and we’ve got plenty to say about all of it, but what really makes “Roulette” work for us is Oliver’s redemption. Seeing him rediscover the part of himself that wants to save people, followed by the return of Green Arrow alongside Clark, made this one incredibly satisfying. The Green Arrow is back, and we couldn’t be happier.

Clark and Lois are finally starting to feel like the heart of Smallville, and “Echo” gives us everything we’ve been waiting for. In this episode of Going Back to Smallville, our Smallville Season 9 rewatch podcast and series retrospective, we’re talking about Clark’s temporary ability to read minds, the adorable chaos that comes from hearing Lois’s unfiltered thoughts, and why their growing connection works so well. From maple donuts and a not-quite-date at a monster truck rally to Lois arriving in a gown after Clark stands her up, this episode understands exactly what makes these two special. We also break down Toyman’s return, Oliver’s heartbreaking downward spiral, and Clark realizing that saving his friends means noticing when they need him. We loved this one, but more than anything, we loved watching Clark and Lois move closer to becoming the couple we know they’re meant to be.
