Mike flies solo this week with a notebook full of loose ends. The big one first: he's been pushing himself out of the series novels he usually burns through and into nonfiction, and it's actually taking. Bad Blood and the Theranos saga hooked him, Elizabeth Holmes struck him as one strange bird in every interview he could find, and from there he worked through Wave Walker and a second escape memoir about a girl raised in an Idaho family that didn't believe in the outside world and wouldn't let her get an education. His method is unglamorous: Google lists of great nonfiction, write down titles, go to the library. Then discover the nonfiction section isn't alphabetical, it's numbered, so you look up the book at a terminal, get the number, and go hunt it down in the stacks. A whole new skill at this stage of the game. Latest finish: Blood Work, an ex-SEAL's eight very basic life lessons, make your bed, don't walk away from something that went sideways, work through it. Next on the wish list: a 9/11 book, maybe Enron, maybe some courtroom drama, as long as it's true.
Then there's the squirrel. Mike's deck cushions have been chewed to ribbons for a while with no suspect, until he walked through the kitchen, glanced out the window, and caught a squirrel sitting on top of one of the chairs mid-crime. The neighborhood black squirrel is a known troublemaker, a pro, and the case got weirder when Mike stepped out to grab a spearmint leaf for his tea and found a piece of concrete sitting dead center on the deck, all by its lonesome, like it had been placed there. He's putting it back out. Let the little guy have it.
The rest is life admin and gear research. The name change is finally rounding third: license came fast, passport took forever, the passport card showed up in its own envelope, and all the original paperwork came back separately, which cleared the way for the credit union, the bank, and an American Express upload. The insurance guy caught a coverage change he'd forgotten to make and is prorating it back. The caretaker is working out great. On the kitchen front, the coating on Mike's 8 inch All-Clad is coming undone, so he's eyeing a Misen black carbon pan, carbon all the way through, no coating to fail, while an All-Clad ceramic pan sits on the counter making him a little leery. And after going down the GLP-1 rabbit hole comparing everything against Ozempic, hoping for a pill instead of a shot, he's calling it: too much noise, too many ads, just start the Ozempic and see what happens.
Key Takeaways
● Nonfiction is the new lane: Bad Blood, Wave Walker, an Idaho escape memoir, and Blood Work, with 9/11 and Enron style true stories next on the list.
● Library nonfiction is numbered, not alphabetical, which means a terminal lookup and a hunt through the stacks every visit.
● The deck cushion mystery is solved: a black squirrel caught in the act, plus a piece of concrete left sitting in the middle of the deck.
● The name change is nearly done, with license, passport, passport card, bank, credit union, and Amex all handled, and utilities and phones left to go.
