Publisher's Summary:
The road to hell is paved with good intentions...tequila, guns and cocaine. Inspired by the author's time with Hunter S. Thompson, Gonzo Girl is a smart, rollicking ride told with heart, a loving fictional portrait of a larger-than-life literary icon, and soon to be a major film.
Alley Russo is a recent college grad desperately trying to make it in the gruelling world of New York publishing, but like so many who have come before her, she has no connections and has settled for an unpaid magazine internship while slinging drinks on Bleecker Street just to make ends meet.
That's when she hears the infamous Walker Reade is looking for an assistant to replace the eight others who have recently quit. Hungry for a chance to get her manuscript onto the desk of an experienced editor, Alley jumps at the opportunity to help Reade finish his latest novel.
After surviving an absurd three-day 'trial period' involving a .44 magnum, purple-pyramid acid, violent verbal outbursts, brushes with fame and the law, a bevy of peacocks and a whole lot of cocaine, Alley is invited to stay at the compound where Reade works.
For months Alley attempts to coax the novel out of Walker page by page, all while battling his endless procrastination, vampiric schedule, Herculean substance abuse, mounting debt and casual gunplay.
But as the job begins to take a toll on her psyche, Alley realises she's alone in the Colorado Rockies at the mercy of a drug-addicted literary icon who may never produce another novel - and her fate may already be sealed.
Critic Reviews:
"Raucous, page-turning, head-spinning, and side-splitting...Gonzo Girl will suck you in and take you on a ride." (Piper Kerman, author of Orange Is the New Black)

A Gem--rich with unique insights on Hunter Thompson
If you love Hunter Thompsonâs brilliant writing or admire his outrageous image, this book shares insights like no other. For the slice of the 80s when Hunter enlivened the Mitchell Brothers theatre as Honorary Night Manager and I was a dancer there, I remember him fondly. Nothing close to the bone like Cheryl Della Pietra experienced as his assistant at Owl Farm a few years later. Hunter's road trips seemed over, a constant stream of celebs and friends came to visit, and it was her task to induce Hunter to get pages done to support his life and style. Resplendent with wild, substance-fueled, at times mean-spirited goings-on, less frequently tenderâthis novel held me captive until its final well-crafted page. Hunter Thompson aficionados are fortunate to have it.
--Simone Corday (author of â9 Â Years Behind The Green Door, A Memoir: a Mitchell Brothers Stripper Remembers Her Lover Artie Mitchell, Hunter S. Thompson, And The Killing That Rocked San Franciscoâ)
If you read HST like it's religion then this is a kind genuflect in his direction...
A read very reminiscent of the gonzo journalist himself. Trying to decipher where fact becomes fiction makes this a fun read. Did the author really sleep with Johnny Depp? Or did her fictionalized self dream it? To the extent that any of this reflects reality it was interesting to discover Hunter's softer & romantic side. In addition to his self-awareness of his becoming an 'industry' and his being 'washed up'.
