“Good” is a Two-sided Coin for Christian Growth

Listen Later

What is “Good”?

“Good” may mean different things to different people. Without making assumptions, we can look at the Bible and see what it says about it. This helps us understand what the Bible teaches us about it and how to do it.

In studying this out we notice that there are two basic thoughts about goodness, like two sides of the same coin. First, we learn that “good works” are required of Christians. The second lesson is that we cannot expect to be saved because of our goodness. Since both of these ideas are in the Bible, it is important to understand how the two sides of the coin work together.

Good in Two Words

For the purpose of this podcast, we are looking at two words that are both translate into English as “good”.

The first carries the idea of “moral goodness”. That is what most people think about when they say they are doing something “good”. It’s a moral word. It does not matter how you view morality or where you get the idea of “good”, this word describes it for us.

The second word carries the idea of morality but emphasizes “usefulness” as an added concept.

Summary and Application in the Podcast

This podcast dives into these concepts with illustrations from the Bible and a good discussion of some applications, especially as this relates to our salvation from the punishment of sin and becoming a Christian.
