Can HR really carry the AI transformation?
Khadija Ben Hammada's answer: "At some point, someone has to go first. So why not us?" Merck has also put some of its best talents, people who manage key accounts or are among its best marketers, on the most complex AI challenges. Khadija doesn't claim that's best in class. It's how Merck looks at it: the best people should unlock AI's potential. A live episode of GOOD MORNING L&D, recorded at UNLEASH World in Paris.
My guest:
🌀 Khadija Ben Hammada, Member of the Executive Board and Chief People Officer at Merck, the science and technology company headquartered in Darmstadt.
We talk about:
• How Merck moves from first experiments with AI tools to adoption across the whole workforce • Why AI upskilling is an HR responsibility, and why every leader still has to step up • The role of leaders in AI adoption • How to make the case for learning time in the boardroom • Skills, talent marketplaces and internal mobility • How to measure the ROI of AI in HR

Three days in Paris, and one shift kept coming back: when companies at UNLEASH said learning, they meant redesigning the work itself. In the final episode, Moritz Ettl and Gary Bolles take stock of the week and ask what HR and L&D leaders can take back to work on Monday morning. In this episode:Three things for Monday morning: Gary's 'zoom in, zoom out, reinvent', and why Moritz says leaders can no longer delegate AI.Three questions to spar with: what to ask your team about experiments, performance conversations and how you'd know you're really learning.Worth your time: Gary recommends Markus Graf (Nestlé), Moritz recommends Brian Glaser (Google). What's one experiment your team ran this month, and what did it teach you?Stay in touch after Paris with the Forever Day One newsletter: https://bit.ly/4i1h9aRHost: Moritz Ettl, https://www.linkedin.com/in/moritzettl/Co-host: Gary Bolles, https://www.linkedin.com/in/gbolles/All episodes: https://foreverday.one/en/good-morning-ld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GML1D#UNLEASHWorld #GoodMorningLD #AITransformation
Day two in Paris came down to one word: trust. When every company catches up on AI tools, what lasts is whether you trust your people to keep learning.
In this episode, Moritz Ettl and Gary Bolles talk about:
What shifted: Why an early AI lead won't last, and why German companies operating globally say AI change can't be steered from Germany.
Heard in the corridors: A wave of HR tech consolidation, and a senior HR leader asking out loud whether HR is the right function to lead AI change.
Worth your time: Gary recommends Markus Graf (Nestlé) on moving from knowledge to learning, and Barbara Martin Coppola (Patagonia board) on what boards care about in the people function. Moritz recommends Brian Glaser (Google) and Jayney Howson (ServiceNow), whose team crowdsourced its AI transformation from the bottom up.

Day one in Paris showed a gap: US companies are under pressure to prove business value from AI, while some European teams are still classifying emails. That pressure is heading your way.In this episode, Moritz Ettl and Gary Bolles talk about:What shifted: A US expert in AI transformation expected a group far along with AI and met a team that had just spent a week classifying emails so AI couldn't scrape them. Gary explains why the pressure in the US has moved from experimenting to business value.Old wine, new bottle: "Are you token maxing?" is the new "Have you been on the internet today?" Why every buying spree ends in consolidation, and why counting adoption still says nothing about impact.Heard in the corridors: CHROs used to want a seat at the table. Now they need one at many, from the CFO to IT. Plus transformation fatigue: what happens when people have to change again and again without shaping the change.Worth your time:Gary recommends Chetna Manglik (Danone) and her multi-year push for a single source of truth on people and skills data. Follow her on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chetnamanglik/Moritz recommends Gianpiero Petriglieri, professor at INSEAD. "All of this AI technology is not here to eliminate jobs or make things more efficient. That's going to happen anyway. It's to enable your company to grow."
The best transformation teams, Josh Bersin says, bring three groups together: the business that does the work, IT and HR.
The skill they need most is facilitating change across functions, and that's an L&D skill. His comparison: this isn't an IT project like rolling out Workday. It has to be co-designed.
In this episode of GOOD MORNING L&D, I ask him what that means for HR and L&D.
My guest:
🌀 Josh Bersin, founder and CEO of The Josh Bersin Company. He has worked in HR and L&D for 30 years and is one of the best-known industry analysts for HR, leadership, corporate learning and HR tech.
We talk about:
• AI and the future of jobs
• young talent and the talent pipeline
• who moves first when AI arrives, and who needs support
• learning in the flow of work
• HR 2030 and the future of L&D

"Learning has never, ever been more important to organizations. Not training, learning."
While many in L&D worry about AI automating their function, Sandra Loughlin sees the opposite: the business needs learning more than ever, and that changes what our job is. That's what I talk about in this episode of GOOD MORNING L&D.
My guest: 🌀 Sandra Loughlin, Chief Learning Scientist, EPAM Systems
A learning scientist who spent her academic career on how people build complex thinking, and the first guest to join the podcast for a second time.
We talk about:
• Why AI makes judgement and conditional knowledge the human edge • What boards lose when they cut juniors and middle managers
• Why efficiency is no longer a competitive advantage • Why a field defined by content development won't survive AI
• The two tables, and where L&D and HR need to sit One practice to take away: Sandra asks business leaders how they learn themselves. They answer: reading, trying things, practising. That is how everyone learns, she tells them, and it costs time. Once the opportunity cost is on the table, most leaders choose to pay for it.

"It's not the teams that have the least mistakes that are the most high performing. It's the ones that talk about their mistakes the most."
Some of what we call learning design builds an experience where a checklist would have done the job. That is one of the threads in this episode of GOOD MORNING L&D.
My guest:
🌀 Patrick "Paddy" Hull, Global Head of Talent, Culture and Leadership at Heineken https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-hull-98602210/
Paddy came to Heineken, a brewer with nearly 160 years of history, from Unilever, where he was VP Global Learning and Future of Work. He works from first principles rather than from trends, and he is unusually specific about the mechanics.
We talk about:
Why he does not believe in the concept of a learning culture, and what he looks at instead
Resources versus experiences: when a checklist beats a two-day workshop, and when only a designed experience will do
Why banning the lecture makes subject matter experts more creative rather than less
How COM-B is used to design and measure a first-time manager programme
What happens to succession planning if you treat abolishing it as a constraint
Why vulnerability is the third term in trust, and what its absence does to a performance culture
Loneliness at work, and what a purpose built on togetherness asks of an L&D function

Mein Gast:

Mein Gast:
🌀 Katharina Rath, Chief People Officer bei Voith
