Good morning, everyone.

Well, I just came in to record something and I had no idea what I would speak about. And just as I was sitting down in front of the mic, I thought, well, what about death?

Why not? Let’s find out. Let’s be on holiday for a moment. Just blown wide open.

Pure aware being.

Pure aware being doesn’t deny anything that is appearing, body, sensations, sensory objects, and all of that, but it outshines all of it.

It’s the most obvious of anything. Let’s be there for a moment.

So let’s look into our own death. What is that? Many people think about death. Some people even very early in their young life for some reason start thinking about death. And everyone of course is concerned or fears for their own death.

But what is it really that dies? I’m not saying I know the answer. I’m saying let’s look and find out.

As with any other thought, as with any other idea, as with any other concept, as with anything related to time, where does any of that take place?

It’s all thought, isn’t it? Everything I just mentioned.

So where does past take place? Is past actual?

Look and see. Where is it?

Isn’t it true that what is, is only this, now?

Past is not actual, it’s a thought.

And future as well.

Where is future? Again, there’s only this, now. Future is only a thought.

So for a moment, don’t refer to any thought about time, past or future, and simply be pure being aware now, and then where is past and future?

Obviously they are not, because what is, is this.

And so, as relating to death, when is it that I am going to die?

In the future.

But as we just saw, other than the thought of a future, in truth, there isn’t a future, there is only this, what actually is.

So that thought of a future is only that, a thought, it’s not an actuality.

So the idea that I’m going to die in the future is exactly that, an idea, a thought.

And as with everything else we look into often, that idea or thought that I, that’s going to die in the future, is the rising I appearing out of pure knowing being.

This movement, this idea that claims itself to be I, but is really the phantom, because I am ever-existent now.

So, the I that fears its demise or death in the future is a thought.

««»»

Because of the first thought, which is the rising I, which is I am separate, the first thought, which is underneath every other thought, that first thought, because of that first thought, imposed on top of that is the subsequent thought, “I” am going to die.

But here now, blown wide open, pure being knowing that outshines everything. There is no thought of I. There is no future.

And there’s no I that’s going to die either.

What I’m saying sounds radical and it sounds extreme and of course the body is going to drop and all of that, but if you, for a moment, in a very radical way can be nothing, no thing, no thought, no rising I, pure being, pure aware, only that you see in that there is no death, because there’s no one there to die and no future in which that one will die.

Like now, let’s have a look. Radically no thing.

Really, truly, and in your own experience, there’s only now. That’s all there is, you know. That’s not a clever little anecdote or anything like that.

It’s simply what is, is now, you know.

When I rise as a separate self, immediately time rises with that. Past and future rise with that. And someone here who can die rises with that. And who will die in the future rises with that as well. And then fear comes, of course.

And understandably, of course.

But for a moment, jump off birth and death and be as you are, eternal life here and now.

Eternal doesn’t mean a long time or forever or what you become after death or something like that. Eternal just means now. It’s eternally this, eternally now.

Eternally I am.

And in that there’s no death.

Good morning, everyone.

What is it that is dissatisfied with this moment as it is? That’s pretty obvious.

In the absence of the egoic movement, the rising I, the separative I,

like now for a moment, let’s just be pure aware of being.

Prior to the rising of that separative I, who is here to say anything is wrong with this moment or that something should be different?

If there’s no one here to say that something is wrong or something should be different, then nothing is wrong and nothing should be different.

In the rising I, which is the egoic movement, well, inherent in that is that there’s something wrong, because it’s an immediate sense of separation, of contraction, of opposition.

And so the rising I, that movement of ego, can never be truly satisfied or at ease. It can have moments of feeling satisfied when it gets something that it wants, you know, an object of the senses or a physical object or a little piece of intellectual information or something that soothes its sense of lack for a moment.

But that doesn’t last. There’s always the next thing, you know. Because as I said, inherent in the rising I is dissatisfaction, disconnection, separation.

True contentment or being at ease with this moment is not found there in the rising I, ego. It’s found in this moment itself. And this moment itself, here now, pure aware being is synonymous with I. I am this moment, pure aware being now.

It’s what I am.

Let’s see this for ourselves.

So have a moment prior to the rising I, pure aware being, synonymous with now.

I am that.

So if you recognize that and can abide as that for a moment, then you can also see that the one who has a problem with this moment isn’t here. In which case it means there is no problem with this moment.

Because that one is gone.

Like now.

As with everything I try to share or impart, it’s just to notice, just to see the functioning. I don’t like to make any hyperbolic statements that you must kill something or do this or kill that or get rid of something. No, just see what’s going on here.

The dissatisfaction with this moment as it is appears only with the one who is dissatisfied, the rising I.

The rising I is the dissatisfaction, and the dissatisfaction is the rising I. So true contentment and ease of being won’t be found there.

It’s found in what already is as what I am, my essential being, which is that peace, contentment and all of that.

And so I just say, for a moment, come back to the Heart.

The Heart meaning what I am prior to all of that. Not the physical heart. I mean the Heart of everything as it is. The true Heart. And be there for a moment.

And see that without the rising I, there’s really no problem.

And the point of my incessantly inviting you to be on Holiday is that you become convinced that this is what I am. This is my actual being.

So, instead of having to kill something, I recognize what actually is true, what I am.

And then I’m no longer so concerned with what arises either. Because I know, prior to all of that, all is well.

So be in the Heart, the Heart of everything, the source of it all, what I am, pure aware.

And then even the occasionally rising, dissatisfied I loses its sting. Because you can’t be so fooled, you know. Or you can’t be fooled at all.

Because you know.

Know what’s true, and truth will set you free.

What am I? What am I really? What am I eternally? What am I that’s always fine?

Come to know that.

And abide there more and more, and it will become doubtless.

So for a moment, let’s just be in the Heart, pure aware being.

Ego is not an entity, a sentient thing.

Ego is a movement, an activity.

Let’s have a look. You can keep your eyes closed if you’d like.

Just rest now as pure aware being, for a moment.

This is pure knowing. Not of anything in particular. just the fact. knowing.

It’s the core of what I am. It’s that in which everything is known, all of the moving parts.

But I, knowing or aware, don’t move or change. I’m always there at the root of whatever is known.

So I suggest for a moment just be knowing or aware.

This what I am knowing doesn’t need anything other than myself to know myself.

I know I, Subject, Subject.

Out of this pure knowing, aware being, the objects of the five senses occur. Visual objects, auditory objects, touch, taste, smell objects.

Those objects occur. They’re the known. I am the knowing of those objects.

In and of themselves, those who don’t constitute go, just simply moving parts appearing in knowing.

So we just come back to knowing for a moment again.

Other moving parts are sensations of the body. You can now be aware of or know a plethora of sensations.

Have a look. Some subtle, some more gross.

Those are objects known.

Knowing, what I am.

««»»

Other moving parts or thoughts, these are also known objects, known within knowing, what I am.

And of course emotions as well, happiness, sadness, well, so many different emotions. Those are moving parts as well, known to myself, knowing.

In and of themselves, none of those moving parts are ego.

When I believe myself to be, when I act as if, when I know myself as any of those moving parts, which of course would be mostly thoughts and emotions and sensations of the body.

When I know myself as that, that’s an activity.

It’s arising out of no thing and acting as something.

Nothing wrong with that movement.

Just pointing out that that identification, that rising self, that ego, is not a sentient thing. It’s not an entity. It’s a rising movement, fleeting, ephemeral, temporal. A wave rising out of ocean of pure being and subsiding back into pure being.

And the entire time of its appearance, it is only pure being.

And it’s transparent. You can see through it just like you can see through clear blue water.

Permeating that rising I or ego is pure being, the Self.

There is no separate ego, which is good news because that means there’s nothing to kill or even transcend.

There’s only to notice and to know what’s actually happening.

Ego is not an entity or a thing or a sentient being.

Ego is simply a movement and activity arising like a wave out of the ocean of pure being, what I am.

And so for a moment, just be as you are, pure aware being.

And notice all of the different moving parts, sensory perceptions, sensations of the body, thoughts, emotions, and the rising of a so-called separate self.

All moving parts, all temporal, all temporary. Rising out of the ocean of myself.

And be that.

Good morning, everyone.

A good question to pose for yourself, and this is just a possible, another means of coming to pure aware being.

So the question is, when you’re sitting here and something arises, thoughts or emotions, and you notice that’s happening, just ask yourself,

what am I prior to this?

No answer will come.

It’s not about having an answer. It’s about the mind and that sense coming to rest in favor of just being blown wide open, pure aware.

So let’s just sit here for a few minutes and just be as you are. And pose the question, when am I prior to this, whatever it is that’s appearing.

Just pose it once, though. Don’t linger on the thought there. But pose the question, when am I prior to this, whatever is appearing now? And just see.

It just will thrust you out into pure aware being, that question itself.

This is really a very good thing to do, especially for those moments when mind is very compelling, you know, a story is there or something that is really taking your attention away from pure being.

In that moment, just say, hey, what am I prior to this movement here? And that can stop whatever movement is happening for a moment.

Enough for you to come out into the sun and be pure aware being.

This is kind of a practical way to see something different in the midst of anything, but particularly in troubling moments.

««»»

In that case, when troubling moments happen, you can see those in a new light, in the light of a gracious movement of life, reminding you to turn around and know what you are prior to all of that.

So those troubling moments are very nice opportunities.

And you get to really see in those moments, without any judgment, well, what am I really devoted to? If I’m really devoted to freedom, then it’s here. I can have that in any moment. Even if the moment’s not feeling particularly good or whatever it might be, confusing, maybe some troubling emotion, even if it’s not feeling good, still in the midst of that, I can at least for a moment come out into the sun and see what I am prior to that.

And so then Bhakti is about being committed to living more like this, more open, more free, less hypnotized by those movements.

««»»

So then instead of being just wrapped up in this story of self, self-pity, self-judgment, self-blame, whatever it can be, you know, self-victimization, instead of being completely involved with that, real Self-love is the love of Self. That which is free in every moment.

What I am.

««»»

So this is living a life of devotion, really. And it’s a beautiful thing, actually. Devotion to truth, not with a capital T, but truth, the truth Being. I’m free in every moment, actually. I am aware being eternally, never changing. I know that I am. None of these things can be denied, actually. They’re true, you can see.

This way of living or this way of being is devotion to that, to truth.

So for a moment, let’s just be here sitting together. And when something appears, thoughts or a sensation or an emotion, intention goes there, just ask simply, what am I prior to this?

And don’t wait for any answer, just immediately you’ll come out into the sun, pure being.

And notice this throughout your day, of course. That’s where it counts, not only while you’re sitting here together with me, but it counts in your life.

Blown wide open. Pure knowing, pure being. I sound like a broken record, but really what more is there?

The way to be free is to recognize that what I am prior to the movements of mind and body and to be there.

If you recognize that I, pure being, prior to the movements of mind and body, are free, then the way to be free is to be free, like now.

Just notice the allure, completely habitual of the movements of the mind.

««»»

Notice the self-concern also. The me-me story.

Well, that’s really just what the rising I, ego does, of course, naturally. It’s narcissistic, obviously. That’s what narcissism is, no? So everyone is narcissistic in a way because everyone’s main interest is for self. And of course, that’s completely natural, isn’t it?

It’s even healthy to an extent to take care of oneself mentally and emotionally, all of those things, of course, not to deny. But, you know, we can be a bit obsessive, too self-interested in a way, you know.

So I just suggest attending to the Self that never changes, that is not localized or centered somewhere, that doesn’t need anything actually, you know.

My own essential being, you’re always. Let’s be that.

Just notice when too much narcissistic attention to one’s individual personal world, it’s kind of neurotic, no?

What I call freedom or liberation is the natural human condition of health. It doesn’t deny anything.

It abides mostly as that which is already pure health, pure contentment, pure happiness.

When something’s needed for body, mind, or whatever, fine. Then it’s addressed.

But when it’s addressed strictly from the carousel of itself, then it becomes neurotic, too self-focused. When it’s known in the larger context of what I am, then there’s a different perspective on all of that, isn’t there?

You can really have this different perspective by coming to know what you are at the source, pure aware being,

coming to know the value of what that is,

coming to see the difference between living from that largely and being neurotically self-focused,

Seeing the distinction there and becoming a Bhakta devoted to the healthy aspect of what I am, pure self-love.

Yes, this is a definite way of being, very easily available. And why not?

Like now.

An endless amazing display. Never ending, never the same from one moment to the next.

And yet I am the same always. Fascinating.

Your security, your safety, your wellbeing, your contentment is all here.

Always available completely.

So for this moment, just be that.

And notice it throughout your day as well.

This is self-love. This is bhakti. Devotion to your own well-being, health, goodness, purity.

So yeah, throughout the day, just recognize this again and again. No effort or pressure or force or anything like that. Just notice, that’s all. Notice that.

What is constantly changing and what always is.

I wanted to share the opening holiday from yesterday’s open meeting on Zoom. So great to be with everyone. Very beautiful meeting, great people, excellent conversations also. But for now, this is just the opening holiday that I shared. Enjoy.

We’re just going to be together for a moment in a very simple recognition. Something that’s always true, always so obvious. So just for a moment now, very gentle, relaxed. Just allow attention not to rest on any object thoughts or sensations or any of the sensory objects, but just attend to your own self, pure aware being.

Simply know that you are, that’s all.

Not anything in particular, no name or anything, no story, no nationality, gender.

Just purely here now being.

I like to say relax the focus of attention. Relax is a good word. Relax attention. Attention is often attracted to something, contracting on something. Nothing wrong with that, but now we’re going to just relax that contraction.

Be purely open, knowing, aware.

Normally when we say I, we are referring to something, this body, this story of self, this limited ephemeral temporal object, that’s I.

But now when we say I, I want us to relax and go prior to all of that rising. Prior to that rising of self, pure aware being, I.

What am I when I’m not relating as my name?

««»»

What am I when I’m not relating as my opinions and beliefs?

««»»

What am I when I’m not relating as my history, story, past?

««»»

When I’m not referring to myself as anything, what am I?

««»»

I still am, obviously. I am.

Without any of those attributes of name and form, and history and opinions, With no attributes whatsoever. Pure aware being. I am.

I don’t need my name to be.

««»»

I don’t need my nationality to be, my skin color to be.

««»»

I don’t need my personal history and story to be.

I don’t need any of that to be, do I?

So I say for a moment, be nothing of that, just simply aware.

Prior to thought, I am.

««»»

I don’t need thought to know I am.

««»»

I don’t need any concept or idea to know I am.

««»»

I don’t need anything other than myself, I am, to know I am.

Pure subject, no object needed.

Pure subject, knowing myself. Can’t be denied. Doesn’t need anything else. Doesn’t need anything else. I simply am.

Doesn’t need a name, doesn’t need any of that, nothing.

Pure being.

Pure subject.

Prior to the rising I that has all of its attributes, name and form and ideas and history, beliefs, opinions, all of it, myriad attributes,

prior to that rising I that has those attributes prior to that,

I am.

And so for a moment, let’s just be that.

The good news is this is always the case, always the case, always the case. Mostly we’re just not aware of it, but when we’re aware of it, it’s the most obvious thing in the world. Nothing can be more obvious.

And the most simple also. So that was from yesterday’s open meeting.

I often say, Holiday reveals everything.

So, let’s find out what it’s going to reveal. Let’s see. Okay.

Let’s be together, Holiday.

You know what that is. Pure, aware of being.

One of the most important tenets of Vedanta and Indian teachings is called Viveka, which means to discriminate. Well, to just speak very metaphorically, to discriminate between what’s true and what’s false.

And that’s equally true for our work. I don’t use the word true or false, but the point being be able to discern between what I actually am, alive, now, sentient, vibrant with being, and what appears as I, which is the time-based story of self replete with enormous amount of attributes. Birth and death, for example. Fears and desires, opinions and preferences, hopes.

The thing about all of those attributes Of course, when they’re appearing, they seem, and for all intents and purposes, are very real, no question. Not to deny that. But each and every one of those is gone instantly when you come to know your essential, timeless being, which is free of attributes.

Like now, for example.

So it’s not about saying those things don’t arise and those things don’t have their own validity. What it’s about is what do we put our main being and existence on? Do we put it on the fleeting, ever-changing, suffering-inducing, appearing self that has really, in truth, no actual substance to it, all of that mind activity?

Or do we put most of our value on the eternal, content being that we always are?

So this is where Viveka or discrimination comes in, discernment. To see this and to live more like this.

So a Holiday, for a moment, is to be that which is eternal, always true, always actual, always what I am prior to any characteristics.

Like now.

««»»

The reason it’s so important to have Viveka or discrimination is to see the spell that’s cast by mind, and to break that spell.

Unless we know what that is, that spell of self, that hypnotizing movement, unless we know that very clearly, and also know an alternative, that which is alive prior to that, what I am, then we really have no chance of being free, do we?

««»»

The difference is very clear. This is in your own experience.

««»»

So it’s good to see this. It’s good to know this. And it’s good to come out into the sun more and more. Make that part of your life experience, daily, ordinary life lived experience. Not a big deal, not a practice, just a new way of being.

««»»

The more you live like this, the more it’s just, you know, you’re convinced, I’m free. Doesn’t matter what’s coming and going.

Doesn’t matter where attention is going. Doesn’t matter if there are thoughts and all of that. Because you’re convinced, you’re free and you become convinced by living this more and more and really discerning the difference between the two and coming to know doubtlessly that what I actually am is now, here, alive, aware, sentient being.

This is what I actually am.

And so then the appearances are fine, no problem.

So for a moment, let’s be together. Pure aware being.

And come to this throughout your day, no matter what you’re doing. Really very simple, isn’t it? Very natural, very ordinary.

It’s the end of you in a way, the end of the seeker. The end of the separative divisive movement of self. You can see that for sure.

Pure aware being. True now, true always, true for everyone.

Let’s look into the solidity of objects or form. When I say objects or form, I mean everything that’s perceivable, the body, its sensations, thoughts, emotions, the sensory objects, and also ego. Which is as well an object.

So, let’s have a holiday for a moment. Be together here. Pure aware being, as we saw yesterday. Just pure aware being.

When we’re being as that, it’s easy, I think, to recognize that there is no inside or outside. I don’t stop at the skin line or something like that and then the world begins.

My actual being permeates everything, doesn’t it?

You can say everything is permeated with being. And that being is one, it doesn’t end somewhere, not centralized somewhere or located anywhere.

Try to recognize that now.

Just notice the body, which is myriad sensations. It’s really, well, have a look.

Maybe close your eyes for a moment and see what this body is. Is it actually solid or isn’t it more like a field of myriad sensations and movements, energies, subtle.

Have a look at that.

If you can avoid the picture the mind wants to paint of a body sitting here, and that’s a very normal thing for the mind to do. But in your own actual direct knowing experience, what shape is the body?

Isn’t it just a field of energetic sensation, movement, energies, subtle, a little bit more gross?

Just notice that really, see.

««»»

It’s really a spacious field permeated by being. Not solid. And this is your own experience, you see for yourself.

««»»

Being also doesn’t end anywhere. What skin line? Skin? Line? What?

Hmm?

Really?

Other than the mind’s painting of that, but in truth, see for yourself, what skin line?

««»»

In truth, the body is more transparent than solid, isn’t it? See for yourself. Being bursts right through all of it. Not stopping somewhere.

««»»

So really, you can see for yourself, the body is transparent. Being permeates the body.

It is, through the body.

Being is, through the body, permeating the body with no end.

««»»

You can open your eyes, all of the visual objects, whatever’s in your environment now, permeated with being.

««»»

Being is ubiquitous. Being is what I am at the root, the core, the source, the essence.

««»»

Aware being, permeating the body and beyond.

Permeating all of the sensory objects and beyond.

««»»

Even thoughts and emotions.

When thoughts are there, being permeates those thoughts as well. You might not consciously be aware of it at first, but there are many times when you are. Often there are just thoughts going in the background, somehow you’re not really attending to the thoughts. They’re there, but you’re not really paying attention And in those moments especially you can see being permeates all of that.

Thoughts are transparent in that way as well, like the body.

You can even begin to notice more and more, even the more compelling thoughts. They’re not solid. The more you know yourself as aware being, the less you, well, I don’t know, fall for it or something like that, I guess.

And the more you begin to recognize that I am here, a present aware being throughout the thoughts as well.

Emotions also. Anger appears, it’s permeated by aware being, it’s transparent. Even that, any of the emotions, sadness, depression, happiness, joy, excitement, fear, whatever it might be, jealousy, all of it is permeated by me.

Aware being.

Transparent.

So what to do about this? Nothing. Except, keep coming to know yourself as aware being. Abide more and more as that.

Be gentle about it. Don’t judge yourself if you get so-called lost in thoughts for a while. It doesn’t matter. But gently come back to pure aware being. Often.

Make this be your way of being more and more.

Like now, what I am,

pure where-being permeating everything.

So, what do I mean by pure aware being?

Well, aware, we can’t deny that, right? Aware is not a thing or an object like awareness or something, but just simply aware.

Can’t deny that, right?

And being, you can’t deny that you are, I am.

Not I am this or I am that, simply, I am. This is being, isn’t it?

So, aware being. Two aspects of you, that are really the same.

And I say pure because this is stainless, spotless, untouched by any movements of body or mind.

Pure aware being has no name, has no form, has no color, texture, time, history, opinions, preferences, beliefs, fears, worries, birth or death, Pure Aware Being. Just now, for a moment, be that.

All of those attributes that I mentioned come with the rising I.

You can see that for yourself.

If you’re just here, pure aware being, and I say, for example, “there’s no fear in pure aware being.”

Then you say, “yes, but I noticed some fear. “This is just one example. You can choose whatever you want. But I noticed some fear.

Okay. Where is that fear arising?

It’s arising as an attribute of the rising I. The self-ego that sees itself as an individual, separate.

Or if you say, “okay, you say pure aware being has no time, no past, but what about my past?”

Okay. Again, where is that past appearing? What is that past attributed to? The rising I, of course.

The rising I is the ego, separative self, all of that. The one that has a story. The one that has history.

But right now, pure aware being.

If you can recognize this as what I am eternally, prior to rising as a separate I, but what I am eternally, if you can recognize that, then you can also say,

I have no history.

I only am.

Is that clear? I think for most people.

So a holiday is to know myself not as the rising I with its attributions, its separation from everything else, not to know myself as that, but to know myself prior to the rising of that, pure aware being.

And so, I say, know yourself in a little different way than you’ve known before.

No need to deny anything.

The body, thoughts, emotions, experiences, sensory perceptions, no need to deny anything. Those all are here arising just as wave rises out of the ocean. When a wave rises out of the ocean, what you’re looking at is ocean with the name wave on it.

So when you look at yourself, body, mind and all of that, what you’re looking at is source rising as whatever is rising in this moment in form and appearance.

This is what I say is non-duality.

I’m not just awareness.

I’m awareness and also the rising body-mind. The rising body mind is source in appearance. Not two.
