Good Question – Using Common Sense and Seeking Counsel in God's Guidance

Listen Later

In this episode of our "Good Question" series on being directed by God, we explore the second and third of the five "C's" - common sense and the counsel of the saints.

Key points:

  1. Common sense - using reason, life experience, and sanctified wisdom
    • God has given us minds to think, study, and learn
    • John Wesley noted that God often guided him through clarity of thought and reasoning
    • While we have access to more information today, we must pursue true wisdom and deep thinking
  2. Counsel of the saints - seeking advice from mature believers
    • "Saints" refers to all Christians, those positionally holy in Christ (Philippians 1:1)
    • Scripture encourages seeking counsel from those further along in their spiritual journey (Proverbs 12:15, 15:22)
    • Wise counsel should come from those with relevant experience and success in the area of concern
  3. Practical tips for decision-making
    • Write out the decision, weighing pros and cons to clarify thinking
    • Distill the options and present them to a trusted advisor for feedback and prayer
    • Seeking counsel is more effective when you have done the groundwork of thinking through the decision

As we seek God's guidance, He expects us to use the wisdom He has given us and to draw on the experience and insight of mature believers. By combining common sense and godly counsel, we can more effectively discern His will for our lives.

Join us next time as we explore the final two "C's" in this "Good Question" series on being directed by God.
