I met Marie Hoffman, founder of School of Souls, at a co-living in Cornwall, England where I found out that she wrote a novel about a 24-year-old woman who gets a visit from Death and is told she has one more summer to live.

Obviously, I was intrigued... But in this week’s episode, I discover there’s a lot more of Marie in that story than even she realized.

We talk about Marie’s experience coming face-to-face with death, how thinking about dying can actually make us fall more in love with being alive, and why I call bullshit on the advice to “live every day like it’s your last.”

When Joél Simone was a little girl, she would lie on her grandmother’s kitchen floor and have conversations with people who weren’t there.

What began as curiosity (and, in Mary’s words, a little bit of gossip) eventually became a way of looking at other people’s lives to ask some bigger questions: Were they happy? Were they loved? And when all was said and done, did the résumé really matter?

We talk about obituaries that are messy, hilarious, brutally honest, and sometimes downright savage — and why we shouldn’t suddenly airbrush someone’s life just because they died.

And we talk about what hundreds of dead people have taught Mary about being alive: that success might not look the way we’ve been taught, we’re so much more than our worst chapter, and sometimes the smallest details of a life end up mattering most.

Because maybe one of the best ways to think about how you want to live is to think about what will be said when you’re dead.

Nothing prepares you for a conversation about death quite like falling off a horse and hitting your head on a stone wall. When I invited my friend Lily onto Goodbye Moon, I had no idea she had done exactly that… and in this week’s episode we talk all about it.

Lily works with family constellations and horses,  and is quite possibly the most wonderfully woo person I know. Our conversation goes everywhere from what horses seem to understand that humans don’t, to what happens when the dead are forgotten in a family system, to spirituality, God, healing, and the relationships we have with the people and animals we love after they’re gone.
