In March 2014, Maarten was set to fly on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. At the last moment, he switched to an earlier flight—unintentionally avoiding a plane that would mysteriously vanish over the Indian Ocean. Just four months later, he booked a ticket for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, but again, he changed his plans last minute to save money. That decision saved his life, as MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers on board.
