Show Summary

Our guest today is Gordon Tredgold. He’s won an award for the Top 100 Influencer In Digital Transformation. He’s worked for over 25 years in senior leadership positions for Fortune 100 companies. He’s a turnaround expert that companies often call in when they have a failing project. He’s managed teams of up to 1,000 people and departments of hundreds of millions of dollars. He’s someone who truly understands leadership. He’s published three different books; he has over 900 leadership articles, and he contributes to the Huffington Post, Inc, and Entrepreneur.

Gordon’s “aha” moment

Gordon’s aha moment was when he started writing on leadership and found there was a big demand for it. People started reaching out, connecting and sharing his content. Gordon makes things accessible and puts them in simple easy to learn terms. He learned there was a demand for this skill from companies and people.

Goals

A coaching client asked Gordon to help her with her goals of time management and organization. He told her those aren’t goals; those are the tools you use to achieve your goals. He asked her what goal she was after and she said she didn’t know. He said that’s probably why you aren’t hitting it then. If you don’t know what your goal is your chance of hitting it is pretty low.

Give yourself permission

Once people understand what it is they want to do a lot of it comes down to giving them permission. A lot of people know what they want to do, but they are afraid to articulate or give themselves permission.

What’s stopping you?

What’s stopping you is a lack of belief that you are going to be able to do it because you don’t know how to do it. Either a dream is viable or just not feasible (like Gordon’s dream of being an MVP of the NBA as a 5’6 white man over 50). If the dream is viable, then go for it. Most people fail to start. People aren’t afraid of hard work; they are afraid of failure. When people can’t see how they will succeed, it stops them from starting.

Figure out first what you want to do and then how you are going to do it.

Gordon’s biggest obstacle

When Gordon was 16 when his English teach told him he would never be a writer. This stopped him from being a writer for a long time. He also thought he had to write like William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens, which he couldn’t do. It wasn’t until he decided to stop listening to his old English and just write the way he talks that he became a writer.

One thing we can’t live without

We can’t live without belief in ourselves. We can’t outperform our own self-image. You need to find something that’s going to give you positivity about yourself.
