God’s armor includes ‘feet sandaled with…the gospel of peace.’ Contrary to the context—spiritual warfare—Bible translators & teachers find here a call to evangelize, Paul’s version of the ‘Great Commission.’ Yet, that notion is foreign to the text. The call is to ‘stand’ in cosmic combat, not to ‘go’ with the gospel. The New Testament never applies military metaphors to the church’s evangelism. ‘‘Gospel shoes” are the firm foundation issuing from the ‘gospel of peace.’ We stand on gospel ground—peace with God & people obtained by Christ—as we war with cosmic powers. Applying the divine attributes of God’s armor—truth, righteousness, & peace—the church ‘becomes the gospel.’ By ‘holding to the word of life’ (Phil. 2:16) the church shines in the world, while manifesting God’s wisdom to the defeated cosmic powers (Eph. 3:10). Let’s stand on ‘gospel ground’ in these ‘gospel shoes’!
