A  listener is dealing with some young horses that are nipping and even head-butting the other horses. And he wants to know why that's happening and what can you do about it.

I worked on a horse that you could see the muscle development on his face was out of balance. One side mandible cheek muscle was bigger than the other and his forehead was developing bigger on one side as well. He just didn't want you to touch his face.

He was only about 14 months old. ,

I told the owners to have the vet check his teeth. And the next time I was there, they said oh the vet refused saying that he's too young. They don't start looking at teeth until age two or three.

Well, they finally got someone to look, and the teeth were just horrendous and he had huge sharp hooks in waves and he was chewing his own cheek when he was trying to eat and he was just head-butting all the other horses just asking for help.

But the problem is with all these knotted rope halters that have no give you put that on a two or three month old foal, even then just rearing up and fighting with the handler because they feel trapped when those bones are so soft as some much damage. So I really ask people to not handle young horses without some kind of give or stretch in a rope.

With these knotted-rope halters, doing so much damage to the horse's head, because there's no give, we need to start looking at the teeth sooner on before they start, you know, nipping biting chewing on things, because that's usually just saying my mouth is bothering me and I need something done are fixed in here or something, but they don't know how to ask for it.

You can look at that on my Horse 101 free e-book, at HorseAcademy101.com. I get into that a little bit. And Holistic Alternatives Horse 102 is also on Amazon, and www.holistichorseworks.com is my website call or e-mail if you have any questions.
