Gentleness
Pre-Christian use of the word “gentleness” (Greek: prautes):
· Aristotle (Greek Philosopher: 384-322 B.C.)—Balance between anger and passivity.
· Plato (Greek Philosopher: 428-348 B.C.)—Behavior of a ruler seeking power.
· Pinder (Greek Poet: 518-438 B.C.)—Mild and kind king.
· Herodotus (“Father of History”: 484-425 B.C.)—Opposite of anger.
Gentleness: “Strength under control.” “Power harnessed.”
Two Biblical Examples of Gentleness
Moses (Numbers 12:3)
Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.
Jesus (Matthew 11:29)
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Gentleness begins by being in the Word.
Gentleness shapes my words.
Gentleness shapes my actions.
