Top GovCon Funding Risk Factors
Winning a government contract is exciting. Funding it is a different challenge.
Many government contractors focus on getting the award. Lenders focus on something else. They want to know if your business can support the financing you need to perform the work. That is the purpose of underwriting. It is not about saying “yes” or “no.” It is about understanding the financial strength of your business.
In our latest GovCon Funding Podcast, Matt Gilman and I discussed 12 credit risk factors that banks and private credit providers review. Here are the three topics that stood out.
1. Cash Flow Comes Before Growth
Revenue is important. Cash flow keeps your business moving.
A lender wants to know one thing first. Can your company generate enough cash to repay the financing?
That means looking beyond contract awards. They also look at:
* Profit generated by the business
* Monthly loan payments
* Cash available after expenses
* A financial cushion if revenue slows
Think of financing like renting money. Before approving the loan, the lender wants confidence that your business can make the payments.
Key takeaway: Growth is valuable, but healthy cash flow gives lenders confidence.
2. Getting Paid Matters as Much as Making Money
Many government contractors are profitable on paper.
That does not always mean they have cash available today.
One of the biggest topics we discussed was accounts receivable. After you complete the work and submit an invoice, that invoice becomes an asset. In many cases, lenders can use those receivables to support financing.
We also explained the difference between:
* Profitability, which shows whether your business is making money.
* Cash flow, which shows when that money actually arrives.
* EBITDA, a financial measure lenders often use when evaluating repayment capacity.
A growing company can still experience cash shortages if customer payments arrive slowly.
Key takeaway: Fast growth can increase working capital needs.
3. Lenders Evaluate the Whole Business
Financial statements tell only part of the story.
Lenders also look at the overall risk profile of your company.
That includes questions such as:
* Does the leadership team have experience managing growth?
* Is revenue concentrated in one customer or agency?
* Does the contract backlog provide future visibility?
* Are the financial statements accurate and organized?
* Is there collateral available to support the financing?
Each factor adds another piece to the overall picture.
Key takeaway: Financing decisions are based on how all the pieces fit together, not on a single metric.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for financing should begin before you submit an application.
When you understand the same factors lenders review, you can identify potential issues early, improve your financial position, and approach funding discussions with greater confidence.
In this episode, we introduced the 12 credit risk factors at a high level. Future episodes will take a deeper look at each one and explain how government contractors can strengthen their funding readiness.
Question: Which credit factor do you think creates the biggest challenge for government contractors: cash flow, accounts receivable, or financial reporting?
