By harnessing the computing power of graphics processing units, or GPUs, it is possible to accelerate many challenging scientific computations. Thanks to the gSTAR supercomputing facility, the GERLUMPH project has generated over 25 Terabytes of data. This is helping astronomers to understand the physical properties of supermassive black holes lurking in the centres of extremely bright and extremely distant quasars. Recorded on 23 July 2014.
