How then do we respond to the suggestion that, of ourselves, we are completely lost and helpless with regards to sin and righteousness and salvation- Sinful pride will rise up and deny our impotence, claiming we must have something good and helpful to offer in our predicament. The Reformation Sola of 'Grace Alone' cuts through any notion that we are able to 'save ourselves', or even contribute to our redemption. The dead cannot raise themselves to life. It is all God's doing. It is all by grace- grace alone. And when God, who is rich in mercy, makes us alive together with Christ, then sinful pride can give way to humble thanksgiving, and we can respond with joy and wonder as we worship the One who came to seek and save the lost... like us.
