Acts 9:1-20 Paul’s best effort to live for God caused him to be one that persecuted the church. His works did not and could not save him.
Psalms 51:1-19 Nothing David could do cleansed him from his sin. If he was to be cleaned, God had to do it for him.
Romans 3 set forth the universality of human guilt.
Romans 3:10-12 Man’s utter sinfulness, helplessness, and hopelessness:

  • His mind – none understand
  • His heart – none seek after God
  • His will – none do good
  • Romans 3:10-12 from Psalms 14:1-3

    Romans 3:13b from Psalms 140:3
    Romans 3:14 from Psalms 10:7
    Romans 3:15-17 from Isaiah 59:7 and 8
    Romans 3:18 from Psalms 36:1
    Romans 3:13 and 14 Emphasize human speech — throat, tongue, lips, and mouth (Matthew 12:37)
    Romans 3:15 and 16 Emphasis on the sinner's feet, where he goes; his ways bring death, destruction, and misery
    Romans 3:19 and 20 No one has the ability within himself or herself to save themselves.
    Romans 3:21-31 We are saved by grace through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Romans 4:18-25 Abraham, like David and Paul, needed God’s help, and so do we.
