Psalm 27 David teaches to how to be "one thing" people by finding our deepest joy, security, and peace in God alone, rather than in the people, possessions, or circumstances that can never truly satisfy us. Through Jesus Christ, we can trust that even in our darkest trials, God has the final word and will one day let us see His goodness in the land of the living.
David shows us in Psalm 25 how to walk with God through the inevitable troubles of life: go to God in prayer, ask Him for guidance and forgiveness, and wait on him in active trust. Because God has been faithful in the past and promises to redeem His people through Jesus Christ, we can face present troubles with confidence that suffering will not have the last word over us. Our ultimate hope is that God will one day redeem His people form all their troubles and make all things right.
What does God want from us when we face suffering we cannot understand? Through Job's encounter with God, we learn that faithfulness is not about having all the answers, but about humbly trusting God's wisdom and submitting to His will. After wrestling with his suffering and questioning God's purposes, Job comes to recognize God's greatness and his own limited understanding. Rather than receiving an explanation for his suffering, Job is called to respond with humility, repentance, and obedience. This sermon encourages us to trust God's sovereign goodness and take the next step of obedience, even when our circumstances remain difficult and unanswered questions persist.
Will Job remain faithful when God’s gifts are taken away? Our righteous deeds are not something we offer to God to earn His favor because even our good works are gifts of His grace. And in the midst of suffering, we can rest in the truth that God perfectly knows our circumstances, our troubles, and our hearts.
The essence of the Christian life is living by faith in the sovereign, speaking God by trusting His Word even when what we see seems to contradict His promises. Through faith in Jesus and patient hope in God’s promised future, we can live God-dependently rather than independently, knowing that the righteous shall live by faith.
The Christian doesn't persevere because of their own strength, but because Jesus Christ is sufficient. As we meditate upon the goodness and sovereignty, we are given the grace to not lose heart.
In a world of trouble, the word 'if' makes a world of difference. If God had not acted as our Divine Defender in the face of overwhelming danger, our story would ended very differently. But because the LORD is on the side of His people, we can praise Him for the absolute deliverance, ultimately accomplished for us in Jesus Christ, who faced the judgment we deserved so that sin, death, and every enemy will never overcome us.
Though God’s people face real trouble and opposition, the Lord’s sovereign hand is always at work. From Peter’s miraculous rescue to Herod’s downfall, Acts 12 shows us King Jesus reign over every circumstance turns our “what ifs” into “even ifs” and gives us confidence that nothing can stop His purposes.
Even in seasons of uncertainty and suffering, the Lord’s mighty hand is with His people. Persecution advances the gospel mission to the ends of the earth and establishes His church as people are turned from false hopes to Jesus, while His grace produces a Christlike community marked by steadfast faithfulness and selfless generosity.
