Beloved: Gospel of John
Grace Upon Grace
October 28, 2018
Please turn in your Bibles to John 1:1-18
“These things are recorded in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” John 20:31
Finding Real Life
1: Life, Light and Darkness
V 4-5: God is the life and light of mankind
V 5: God isn’t darkness
Jesus’ credentials:
V 1a: He’s eternal: always was and always will be
V 1b: He’s God. To see God the Father, look at Jesus
V 3: He’s Creator: He made it all
Why is this important?
a. There really is meaning to life
In Him was LIFE, and that life was the LIGHT of all mankind. John 1:4
b. Life only comes from life
3 Responses to light
V 10b: Some didn’t recognize Him. He didn’t fit their god mold
V 11: Some rejected Him. They loved darkness
V 12: Some received Him
Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13
2: Grace Upon Grace
For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. John 1:16 ESV
Grace (charis): the cause of real joy, lasting pleasure, absolute gratification
3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. 7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 63:3-7
“I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 3:8
“I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
